Police officers, firefighters and security guards have the highest rates of obesity of all professions, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of data from the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

According to the Journal, 40.7% of police, firefighters and security guards are obese. Other jobs with high obesity rates include clergy, engineers and truckers.

On the other side of the obesity scale is a grouping of economists, scientists and psychologists, with an obesity rate of 14.2%. Other professions with low obesity rates are athletes, actors and reporters.

Back in the day, we used to have a cop named "Bear" whom worked in my town. He got so fat that he couldn't pass the physical exams to remain a police officer, so they gave him a promotion to detective..

I have never seen one fat state trooper where I live. I don't know where they are getting their statistics.

They are all sexy and bald =) Most are tall, a few are short.

sounds like a solution,

however i'm quite surprised since I took it that cops that actually work the streets would have to pass the same physical standards as military personell.

Consider the simple fact that if a cop doesn't look physically superior, or even worse if he looks physically inferior, this is something that definitely matters when somebody considers to resist / flee.

State Police have different requirements. The FBI just announced they would now be implementing fitness standards again for all agents, they got lazy and sloppy too.

Anyone in law enforcement should be fit enough to run at any given time. Firemen are usually in pretty good shape, why should we be expecting less from law enforcement?
