Hard Rock Hotel & Casino reports possible credit card security breach

"Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas said on Friday a malware attack may have allowed hackers to steal credit card information used at its retail and service locations.

The potential breach may have included names, credit card numbers and their CVV security codes but not PIN numbers or other sensitive customer information, the company said in a statement.

The attack, discovered on April 3, was limited to credit or debit card transactions between Sept. 3, 2014 and April 2, 2015, at the company's restaurant, bar and retail locations, including the Culinary Dropout Restaurant.

Transactions at the hotel, casino, Nobu, Affliction, John Varvatos, Rocks, Hart & Huntington Tattoo or Reliquary Spa & Salon were not affected, it said.

The company said it is actively cooperating with law enforcement and credit card companies to investigate the attack".


I guess its good to start checking your credit card statements? I did notice that in some of the restaurants there waiters used to take the credit card with them and leave for few minutes instead of brining the machine to your table? Hopefully no damage is made.

In america we don't use those little machines at the table to process credit cards.. first time I saw that was when I went to montreal last year was pretty cool.

I saw them being used in Europe - and also Montreal.

My new card has a chip in it.

Yep, these machines allow both "swipe" and "insert" cards. They have been here (Europe) for years. Its more convenient and bit safer too to not lose your card out of your sight (exactly like Hardrock case described above) but in general it very easy to spot a PIN by someone standing next to you since the machine does not provide any cover. Same in the supermarkets. Person standing behind can pretty easy spot the digits you have been punching…

Since this is a new standard coming to America it means that all the shops, restaurants and basically everyone will have to invest in that machines and upgrade existing portals.

Huge money will be made...

That is correct. For example Amex used to change only the last two digits on the card, so the fraudster had only 99 combinations to find a proper one...

Coming back form Phoenix I got a call from Visa asking if I had purchased 900$ at the Apple store. It was a fraud.
I thought it was from Phoenix as a few years ago. I guess I know now !

Aha! That's why Atos Wordline called me earlier today to replace my creditcard!!

They most definitely were breached during Internext this year. Anyone that used their card at the hotel during the show should double check their statements.

Funny or not i got a call from my bank yday evening informing about my card info being "in possession of someone else" so they blocked it and a new card has already been dispatched… I have not seen any suspicious charges on the statement yet but i presume they were about to come.

I guess things are happening as we speak, so there may be more of such incidents especially for the ones of us who participated in the event in January since the dates of the breach cover that period as well.

I cancelled all my credit cards over 15 years ago, I'm talking about just have a debit card.
or even just a prepaid card, and deposit only the amount you'll be using that week..

Paying in USA is so old skool. I have to use a calculator to calculate 5-25% tip on a bill. Calculate the total price. Give the card, sign pieces of 2-3 of paper. wtf



This is the reason why I don't trust waiters that want to walk away with my creditcard.

Just makes more sense to use a credit card vs a debit card.. a lot more protections using credit.. I remember learning somewhere that the most you are liable for your credit card being stolen is like 50 bucks.. so never signup and pay for extra protections when using a credit card..

Plus why give anyone access to draw money out of your bank!

Someone can do way more damage with a stolen debit card than a stolen credit card. A stolen credit card you lose some time in dealing with changing billing accounts and things like that, you do not lose money. A stolen debit card means someone is directly draining your bank account. Sure, in most cases you will get that money back, but it's going to take a bit of time for the bank to get you squared away.

Credit cards also build your credit, which in itself will save you a great deal of money if you ever plan on buying anything of serious price.
