Around here the "college" is free for everyone. Of course if you have some nuts and bolts loose, you can pay for it. I guess they will take your money if you are enough persistent.

I sent my son to a small private school and they had janitorial duties. 30 kids no maintenance staff. Also it was you learned by your speed. No grades. You advanced by how good you were in any particular subject. If you were 10 and could do college math, you did college math.

When I was in 5th and 6th grade we did just this. At the end of the day everyone had to grab a wet paper towel (the classroom had a small sink in it) and wash off the top of your desk. Each week some students were assigned to other jobs like sweeping the floor, cleaning a counter top etc. I'm not sure I learned anything from it, but then again I am someone who has respect for things and wouldn't vandalize or damage the school in the first place.

Wouldn't we be better served to instead have them spend their summers working (maybe as interns or for a low wage) for companies that are in the field they are studying? For example, if they are studying to be an engineer, have them work somewhere like Intel, HP or some other tech company. They do low level intern type work, but they are exposed to what they are learning about and might get to be involved in some cool stuff that is actually in their field.

This way when they graduate they have some real world work experience in their chosen field which will help them get that good job.

Everything is free from kindergarten to university. Being free means that it is paid by taxes. Schools are mixture of a public and private schools in the sense of ownership, but practically we don't have private schools in the same sense as in some countries.

2013/14 school year for my daughters school cost 5,806,373 to run for 331 students.

So roughly 17.5k per student.

Most of my property taxes do go toward the elementary school here. Charter schools are free for children to attend, but are privately funded and will (in my experience) tolerate a wholeeeee lot less bullshit.

Maybe Sly knows of a study since it seems to be of interest to him.
