Reddit, one of the larger social networks is imploding

A few weeks ago there was a big turmoil about many subs on the site being censored and banned. It's caused a large ripple and an exodus of many uses to a different site.

Then yesterday, one of the key admins was fired with out notice and no one had the ability to step into this person's shoes. The admin in question, was in charge being the go between for Reddit's popular AMA's ( ask me anything ).

There were many popular subs which depended on this person to set up dates, times and be the in between for the countless high profile people whom have done AMA. With out this person the AMA's can not function and therefore all scheduled ones had to be canceled.

There is rumors that this person was fired because of a recent AMA with Jessie Jackson which went about as anyone should suspect would go.. People asked him questions he didn't want to answer.. The next day this admin gets fired with no notice..

Due to this and generally a felling that Reddit as a corporation pretty much ignores it's user base and its many volunteer mods many of the top subreddits have gone private, effectively shutting them down..

Ironically it was sort of the same thing which gave rise to Reddit from the ashes of Digg. digg pissed off their user base and caused a mass exodus to Reddit,, seems Reddit is in the mist of doing the same..

Here is a good link for those interested..

https://www.reddit.com/r/bestof/comm...ll_go_private/

Kinda sucks as I have a few nice traffic subs over there which allow me to funnel some very targeted traffic. I hope the management can salvage the sinking ship, but they seem very quiet so far..

TL;DR. It appears Jessie Jackson has killed Reddit...

Being "social/politically correct" is going to make this a very bland afraid to say anything world.

This is why those cheering at Donald Trump's being dropped by major corporations were wrong.

It's a natural cycle.

Website starts out with a "fuck the man" attitude. Brings in lots of users. Website realizes that the man actually is needed or total chaos ensues. The new dependence on the man forces the website to change to appease the needs of the man. Users do not like the new changes, because they hate the man. Website draws down to nothing.

Bringing on Jesse Jackson was bound to be a disaster. He probably pulled some strings with "the man" to get said admin fired. Whoever is responsible should have told "the man" to get bent, as over time they would have overcome the issue, even though in short time it may have been hard to swallow. By not willing to be patient and ride it out, they folded, and it will hurt them even more so.

Of course I don't know jack about reddit, but this is most likely what happened because it happens with every major "stick it to the man" style website.

Right Wing Christian fundies have had a long successful track record of boycotting people, groups, orgs & businesses which don't appease them. It's not very common to see that coming from the left.. specially when related to politics. It's rare to see it from the left, so perhaps direct that thought toward the Christian Fundies whom do that kinda thing all the time.

Trump is just an asshole kinda like Jessie Jackson.. So he was an easy target soon as he opened his big mouth.

People are going to have to learn to build websites again. You don't own a subreddit or Facebook group. You're subject to whatever the parent site wants to do. Subreddits that go private to protest just look foolish. Build something you own and leave the drama and stupidity behind.

It's about the traffic... Sure you build your own stuff, but it's stupid to leave that kind of traffic on the table, specially for very niche things. Not even talking porn.

Social media is the way of the web today.. Forums for example don't bring the member bases they once did.

Someone close to the company said on Quora (now deleted) that they wanted to commercialize AmA too much with videos and stuff and the admin (Victoria) was uncomfortable with that.

Then they got a FU attitude towards her and abruptly terminated her.

Only problem is she was the only admin to respond to and help unpaid mods so now they're revolting because they feel they no longer have any official support.

It's just a case of senior management underestimating the importance of someone.

Couple weeks ago the geniuses at reddit turned one of our subs over to pirates. Just snatched it like cunts in the night.
I hope reddit sinks to the bottom of the septic tank.

Exactly. The bigger anything gets the more it needs to be managed. The more it is managed, the more it changes until it's nothing like the original product.

Everyone says "fuck the man" but the truth is, they want to be the man.

It's not so much being managed, but the way it was managed and by whom. The site has been mismanaged for quite some time, these recent events are just some of the things which show how bad the management has been.

When a business becomes successful and those who own it/run it become reliant on the cash flow, it's extremely difficult to NOT focus entirely on the bottom line. But of course you have to do things that are counter-bottom line at times to ebb and flow with the times. But the pressure builds to keep that number where it's at (and growing). It's like how Sly described it. It's human nature. It's a cycle.

Thing is, those companies/people who are truly successful know they cannot be so short-sighted and reactionary. That's the path to destruction.

It's actually what happens when "investors" are involved. It's a plague which runs amok throughout the business world these days.. Investors and large stock holders expect that there must always be a rise in income year after year. Usually it gets to a point, where the only way to keep those continued profit growths is to cut the bottom line.

In this case Reddit has been operating under staffed for quite sometime and they were making moves to try and turn the AMA's into paid advertising.. (Ie companies would be paying for the AMA's) which would of doomed them anyway once that was made public.

Apart from the whole Victoria thing, Reddit fucked up big time by not embracing mobile soon enough. The mobile beta site is very difficult to use on most devices and the main Reddit site requires microscopic vision on mobile.

Mobile is where it's at. I have some high traffic sites that gain most of their traffic from sites like Facebook and these are 70%> mobile users. There comes a tipping point where people who mostly use mobile will abandon sites that don't support mobile well for those that do.

Voat.co could be an alternative, but they can't handle recent surge in traffic.
