You can fly to NZ from the UK for about £600 - $20 flights in Europe are rare these days, especially on the route I use most - I pay about £120 each way...

Yes, its cheaper to fly to Spain from the UK than it is to go on the train a few miles in the UK.

I know lots of people (who are not rich) go a few times on Holiday each year outside the UK.

Holidays in the UK are not cheap.
