An innocent man was left traumatised after police raided his home after they suspected him of downloading indecent images of children.

But the person viewing the sick images was in fact his neighbour, Martin Cane, who had ?hijacked? the computer for his own benefit.

The 35-year-old had managed to gain access to his neighbour?s Internet by using old passwords he had found online.

As a result, police raided the wrong house, turning it upside down during the search.

However, after finally realising he was completely innocent, police turned their attention to Cane - who has a previous conviction for voyeurism after taking photographs of a woman while she was asleep in her underwear and had received a caution for possessing indecent images.

When they searched his home, police found 74 indecent images on a computer tower, 14 on a hard drive, 374 on another hard drive, and two on Cane?s mobile phone.

He also had file-sharing software on his computer and admitted his intention was to share the images with other paedophiles.

Some of the images and films were rated at Category A - featuring extreme abuse and were of children as young as two.

A court heard Cane, from Hull, East Yorks., twice accessed other people?s Internet accounts, from Hull provider KC, to search for the images.

Claire Holmes, prosecuting, told Hull Crown Court: ?When he was interviewed, he indicated that he had been using neighbouring internet connections.

"They were password-protected and he searched for passwords on routers KC used to use.?

Cane admitted one count of possessing indecent images, four of making indecent photographs, and two of fraud, which related to hijacking other computers.

His defence argued that he went back to viewing indecent images after his previous conviction caused him to split up from his wife.

Judge Mark Bury sentenced Cane to two years and eight months in jail.

It's easy to get access, btw, just takes a while. Scan and save data only packets from a WEP encryption, wait a few hours, concatenate the strings and use Aircrack to see if you got any handshake packets then brute force it.. :p

I actually had a second computer set up as a router to offer free wifi for a while. This was in the days before cheap net connections (or smartphones with data plans were big), and I had a business account with a generous data allowance that I barely used, so I thought I'd share....

Luckily no one ever came knocking on my door.

A guy I know got his high speed account setup (house was in the middle of the city) and left his router wide open. (doesn't know how to use computers other than to check his email)

Ended up with $300+ of bandwidth overages the next month. Luckily he didn't have unlimited bandwidth or he would have never known people were using it. Who knows what they would have downloaded eventually. Lots of creeps out there in his part of town. lol

You should have a really good password for your wireless. There is a unix program called airodump-ng that runs on Linux that can catch hashes through the air. Password lists can be used to dictionary attack.

You should also use a combo of lower case, uppercase and special characters. And don't make it something like Hello1!. And don't make it just numbers.

The same hash grabbed with airodump can be used in OCLHashcat (that uses masks). They look for common patterns.
?l?l?l?l?l?d?s Brute forces all possible combos with 5 lower case followed by one digit followed by one special character.

If your password is a 10 digit number, Even though it is 10 digit a mask can be used to guess the numbers really fast in OCLHashcat.
?d?d?d?d?d?d?d?d?d?d - same as a phone number - It didn't take long to try all these combos on a crappy graphics card.

If they ever make a version of airodump-ng to go one windows with a nice GUI interface, Things will change.
