What happens if Godaddy goes kaput?

What happens if Godaddy, or any other registrar goes out of business? I have quite a few domains through several different registrars, and they are my sole source of income. If they go away, so does my income.

Anyone know?

It would be bought by another company and they take all the previous customers.

ICANN would appoint a receiver for the registrar's domains and the DNS would be continued until it is settled. This has happened before with a much smaller registrar.

I would expect 60 - 90 days pandemonium but the DNS disruption would be nil -- the domains' DNS entries would be frozen in the root servers and would not update.

Renewals and suspensions would be frozen until there was a back end interface made available to domain holders -- a moratorium period would be set on suspensions for non renewal until the interface is made available (I hope )

Otherwise, riots in the streets and an assault on the ICANN offices by litigation attorneys.

registrars go under and I've lived through registerfly (i think that was their name) going under.. They will move them to a new registrar or you will have a chance to move them to your choice of registrar

ICANN has a managed process for dealing with domain registrar failures.

Registrars are required as part of their agreement with ICANN to maintain a third party backup of all data which is monitored and overseen by ICANN.

ICANN can gain access to this data at any time, regardless of registrar status e.g.: if they have a belief that a register is not abiding by ICANN rules or if the registrar looks like going into liquidation.

If ICANN deem necessary then they begin a well prepared procedure called the De-Accreditation Registrar Transition Procedure (DART).

The first option in the procedure provides the failed registrar to nominate a gaining registrar to take the bulk of domains. ICANN needs to approve the nomination. If this occurs then domains are simply transferred to the gaining registrar.

The more drastic option is that ICANN will call for expressions of interest from all registrars and then choose a gaining registrar from those expressions of interest and domains are transferred to that gaining registrar.

If neither of these options can be arranged within a reasonable period of time then ICANN itself will take over the handling of the registered domains to the point of locking all the domains and then allowing registrants to unlock and then transfer the domain to their registrar of choice.

These eventualities have been well thought out and the worst case scenario for anyone with an affected domain is that they will have to recover their domain via an unlocking process that ICANN has put in place and transfer the domain to a new registrar.

Yes, that is who I meant I couldn't think of their name. That mess went on for a while as I recall. ICANN had their finger up their ass for a few weeks or more back then.

Yes, the internet. I own websites that make me money, including my flagship mainstream business where 99% of my business is from online sales via my website. And then I develop websites and web apps for clients for whom I purchase domains for and develop sites. The Dubya Dubya Dubya Interweb is my job, my life force - it's what I do. It's like taking a mower and weed-whacker away from a landscaper.

I don't think there's a single web person that doesn't have a nightmare story about Godaddy. A bunch of my domains went into "purgatory" and they were trying to get me to pay a king's ransom to get them back (I believe it was around $350 per domain, but this was back in 2005 and I was poor). I'm not poor now, I'm broke. Big difference.

I've never purchased hosting from them, and never will. But I've used their Cpanel because of clients who already purchased hosting, and I don't like it. However, I will continue to use them for domain purchases for as long as I can create unlimited email accounts and change my IP through a VPN. Hard to beat $.99 domain names for life.

And to be honest, like everyone else already stated, Godaddy ain't going nowhere. I like stability in the little bit of control I turn over.

Oh ok. I thought you meant your sole income was from "domains", like buying/selling them. I know some people make bank doing that, especially if they have aged domains. So owning websites etc is cool, I get that.

Congrats on living the dream. Sweet, isn't it?
