anyone else get frustrated with people who can barely use a computer?
I have a long distance friend in his 50s who wants to have a website and work from home like I do. So I got him a domain name, setup a hosting account, set all that up for him and even installed wordpress on his site for him. I also put up a logo on his site and wrote out detailed instructions on how to log into wordpress and how to post his content.
Theres a plugin he needs that I installed for him and all he needs to do is register for it and copy the security key they give him and paste the security key into the plugin settings, and he cant fucking do it! The plugin has a VIDEO teaching people how to register, get their security key and paste it in, I sent him the video and HE STILL CANT FUCKING DO IT. I spent 3 hours over 2 days coaching him on the phone and he cant figure out how to copy and paste. How the fuck do people in 2015 not understand how to register for something and not know how to copy a number from their email and paste it into a webpage and click submit? And how the fuck do you want to have a basic internet business and not understand how to open email and copy and paste? Thats like a chef who doesnt know how to turn on an oven. had to rant. So fucking annoyed. I know a 5 year old who copies things on his ipad and pastes it. He even saw his dads passcode and uses it so he could download games lol. Yet a 50 year old man cant copy something from his email to a web page. |

I gotta help everyone. I hate it. I now pretend to know nothing so I don't have to help. Especially internet connection problems and printer problems.

I've explained the concept of folders and organization of files to my mother-in-law at least 10 times over the years. She still doesn't understand how to open an explorer window and view/move files on the computer. She seems like an otherwise very smart person, but this makes me think she might be some kind of high functioning retard.

my mom is this way.I bought her a kindle fire hd a few years back but the only thing she knows how to do on it is play games (that I downloaded for her) or read her books. Just 2 or 3 months ago she got her first android phone and she can do the basic stuff but for the most part the things I explain to her one day she asks me about the next day.. But she is my mom and I'd do anything for her.

The wife and I bought my parents a pair of Samsung Galaxy tablets last fall. They're both in their mid/late 70s. And they've both figured out the tabs...and literally use them throughout the day for texting, Skyping, reading books...you name it.

My mom can do basic things on a computer like load a program/game, type a Word doc etc. Recently she got online for the first time. I have now spent a good amount of time cleaning spyware and viruses off of that machine. She will click and download anything. No matter how many times I tell her not to and what to stay away from she falls for it every time.

My father just got a tablet just before he flew over to the Netherlands to visit. Between "get this dutch shit off my tablet" (i.e. all the sites he's going to are of course geotargeting) and "how do I do..." questions, well, my evenings are full.

I don't understand how they get their computers so infected with malware. It's like they just click on everything that pops up and hit OK.

What bothers me is not that it's hard for certain people to understand how to use a computer. That is understandable, especially for older generations. That they make no real effort to try and learn on their own is what really frustrates me. It's like they need absolutely everything explained to them with great detail, over and over again.

But I never asked how use a spoon again once you showed me.
And it's not like a spoon can draw a 3D wireframe of the earth or order shoes from Amazon. It lifts food into my mouth.

My in-laws are great examples. Father in law is very old school, and spent the last fifteen years of his career as an artist drawing designs for t-shirts (ironically, side by side with people who did the same thing on computers). Mother in law worked worked for large medical groups running x-ray departments at dozens of hospitals and more or less always worked with computers. Dad can't figure out how to work his TV with multiple remotes, while mom manages multiple computers, laptops, tablets, and cell phones. For myself, I grew up with computers. We had the old school top loading VCRs and the video cameras that required you to carry the recorder in one pack and another pack with the battery. I took computers in high school (which was mostly programming in basic to draw a picture of a house using six lines), and also had a computer at home (with a cassette player). After the military I remember taking courses on how to use Word and Excel; I found these to be really easy. When the home PC became common by the time of Windows 95 I was making web pages.
