It depends on the size of the monitors. I have three 22", and it's pretty nice. But it's almost too much.

Rob is right. 3 Monitors is really good, but only if you have the right monitor size. If the monitors are too big, you may not like it. I would suggest that your monitors not be larger than 27" if you plan to have them all side-by-side. However you may want a big monitor (46" or so) if the 3rd monitor is to be on top or mounted on the wall.

Two monitors is okay - my other PC has two monitors - but I like using three.

1 27 inch monitor more than enough.. also got a 46 inch tv next to me if I really ever needed a 2nd setup

It is not possible to work good with less than three monitors. That is my opinion.

I am using three, one is vertical currently, and I often turn on 4th that is actually 50 inch TV. For example just to watch google analytics live traffic.

I recently went from 2 to 4, but only because I wanted 3 and 4 wasn't much extra hassle. the hardest thing for me to adjust to was 4k resolution even on a 28"monitor makes for some very small icons and text. I have to magnify to 150% for it to be comfortable.

Honestly I would have been fine with 2. Just going to 4k gave me the real estate I needed on my 2 main monitors, I still find uses for the other 2 @ 1080 but it's a lot to manage lol. I am developing a system like one dedicated monitor for IM, one for email, one for whatever document I'm working with right now and the last for file browser windows or background tasks I am monitoring. It all tends to move around since all that screen space is hard to look at from one position and I tend to drag whatever I am focused on right under my nose. I wouldn't go back, but I could definitely get better at managing all these damn pixels.

I have four.

Three are side by side, the fourth one is on top of the center bottom monitor.
