Would You Help Someone End Their Life?..
If they were really suffering but could hang on for months?..

Nah, but I might pull a Kevorkian and help them get what they need to do it themselves. That's provided that there is absolutely no light at the end of the tunnel, no cure, no options. Of course I might suggest that they speak to a therapist before they do the deed.

Yes or no. Depends entirely on quality of life.
Similar thing - I wouldn't stop someone if they had decided they'd had enough of living and didn't want to go on.

If they are member of this forum, then in 95% of cases, my answer would be a quick yes. No questions asked.

Exactly.
My grandmother had colon cancer and they had her go through chemotherapy and it was doing more harm than good. She was 89, and decided she was better off just to die naturally at home. She was found dead a year later in her garden. At a certain point in time you just know you cannot fight it any more. The older you are the more common this becomes. You can devote all of your energy and time fighting it or just enjoy your last few weeks or months. To answer the question directly, it would depend on the circumstances. If it is someone who is younger and has a fighting chance, I would do everything in my power to support them in continuing their life. If they are older and fighting the medical issue does more harm than good or otherwise destroys their quality of life with little hope of survival, I say cut the cord.

Scenarios like this are life-changing. One may think that they would do it, or that they wouldn't do it, but when this scenario is in front of you and there is no longer a theoretical question, there is an actual question, responses may and likely will be different.
What we think we would do and what we would do are often two completely different things. I'm not sure what I would do. There are too many variables to even begin guessing. Hopefully I never have to make that choice.

My wife's dad has cancer and has NO quality of life at all. He is even refusing his tablets now and just spits them back out because he doesn't want to be here anymore. He can't do anything for himself now.
He could still have weeks or even months like this. There has to be a change in the law here to allow family members more power if it's the right thing to do. This has been a horrible time for us these past few months. Horrific actually... |

One thing I can guarantee for anyone placed in the position of having to choose between quality of life vs. continued treatment (ie chemo) for a loved one...you'll always revisit and second guess the decision you make...for a long time afterwards.
It's one of the most difficult things you'll do in life...not an enviable experience. |

The actual fact of the matter is that it makes a huge difference in the framing of the question.
If the question is "would you push a button to kill someone you'll never see or meet or know to end his suffering" the answer for most would be an easy yes because its processed in the brain as a rational / logical question rather than a moral question. If the question was "would you personally stab your mother in the heart to end her suffering" the answer for any reasonably normal person (not a psychopath or otherwise impaired in their emotional / decision processing) would say "no" with no hesitation. The answer to the question will always be first influenced on whether its a moral dilemma or a logical dilemma. The further you are removed from the act (stranger/pushing button etc), the more the question is processed in one area of the brain as a logical dilemma. The closer and more involved you are in the act, the more it becomes a moral question (i.e. you directly harming/killing someone you know). So, really the answer for nearly everyone is yes and no. We are all capable of participating directly in a genocide. We are all capable of murder. We all are inherently against both.... We might all say we are not capable until of any brutal and violent act... right up until the right circumstances present themselves. Context is everything.

When I was quite a bit younger I had a friend who was a nursing student. She had a part time job while going to school working the overnight shift in a nursing home. These were people literally dying of old age...just in beds waiting for death. One night I went on her rounds with her and the experience really opened my eyes about life and death.
She would turn them...most were under 90 pounds with open bed sores that she would change the dressing...just huge gaping holes with no skin of muscle actually from the pressure of their own bodies simply killing the flesh. As I said, literally dieing of old age. Trust me when I say that quality of life rather than quantity of time is the most important factor. Any of these would have been mercy killing to simply end suffering as none of these people had any quality of life left. So my answer would be based on quality of life left. Simple as that. |

It was just a poor choice of words - It makes it sound like he hangs around hospices offering his services - I think he meant he feels good when he helps someone who needs it more than at any other time in their lives...
At least I hope that's what he meant..... |
