:stop Philadelphia set to OK soda tax despite industry opposition

Philadelphia is set to become the first major American city with a soda tax despite a multimillion-dollar campaign by the beverage industry to block it.

The City Council is expected to give final approval Thursday to a 1.5 cent-per-ounce tax on sugary and diet beverages.

Berkeley, California, is the only other city with such a tax. Other proposals have been defeated in more than 30 cities and states.

Two previous efforts to pass a soda tax in Philadelphia also failed.

So they can spend more on the obese.

Why shouldn't the people who consume unhealthy foods, drinks, alcohol, tobacco pay for the cost of their healthcare?

That money will not go to healthcare, nor will it deter unhealthy behavior. It's a cheap Band-Aid that will fall off the minute it hits water.

It will go into the tax revenues somewhere. Not meant to deter people from unhealthy behavior, a cheap Band-Aid is better than nothing.

Who else are they to vote for?

You must know the poor don't pay a lot of tax.

Appeasing half measures lead to ISIS inspired attacks around the world.

Good decision, people are abusing those shitty sugary drinks like they are nothing. It will make them think twice before poisoning themselves.

True. I eat unhealthy pussy and got throat cancer. After a lifetime of paying into a system that doesn't have business fat cats milking it. My insurance was cheaper and less than Americans pay.

It's not just shitty drinks. Add processed food, alcohol, tobacco to the list. The Right scream that taxing them to cover the cost of the damage they do, is an infringement on your liberty.

Bullshit, it's an infringement on them to sell you the stuff as cheap as possible and increase their profits.

The drinks industry doesn't give a fuck if you get fat and die younger than you should. They also don't give a fuck if your insurance doesn't cover you, or that all the problems cause by obesity make your life hard. They care about their profit line. They also don't give a fuck if they move processing plants to Mexico or China. They like it because it increases their profits.

So you want to consume stuff that's guaranteed to make you less healthy. Then pay for your own medical cover via a tax. So those that aren't covered and too stupid to change, end up paying their bills.

This can be applied to lots of things. Like guns. You want to freedom to buy guns you don't need. Pay towards policing, healthcare, prisons and life insurance when innocent victims are killed.

Unless freedom is Fuck you when it goes wrong, I'm free of all responsibility and the rest of you plebs can pay the bills. Which means a rise in National Insurance.

We've had a similar tax here in Orange County, California. 2 liters have been $1.99 for a couple years now.

I had no idea encouraging taxes was a libby thing.

As for my view on taxes:

Income tax:
Should and must be the same percentage for all tax brackets. Lets say it is 20% for all.
If you earn 5 times more you already pay 5 times more using the same 20%, no need to punish big earners even more. Punishing hard earners, smart earners and so on is not good for society - you should encourage most quality people, not punish. Leftards thinks otherwise.

Taxes like this soda drink tax:
I support it because drinks like these affects health, meaning bigger health care spending.
And all that is being paid for everyone (in one for or another).
People who take care of their health should not pay for those who ruin their health. So with this tax - those who ruin their health will pay extra.

The question is - where will this tax go, towards health care or wasted in the whole tax pot?

It will be wasted in the whole tax plot. Just like the lotto, the money never goes to what it supposed to, and over time is forgotten and paid without a second thought.
