What's your take on the UK digital economy bill

Hi Everyone,

I was a long time lurker but now I am a bona fide user Currently I am writing an article for a major online site about how the UK digital economy bill surrounding age verification is destined to fail and I would love to know your thoughts?

It's all very good having adult verification but we know a LOT of the material you guys create ends up on Torrent sites. No torrent site is going to do verification of user age. After all, it is all stolen content. If they are breakling the law already they aren't suddenly going to change.

Is there an up side? Apparently someone who runs adult websites thinks it's a good idea (according to the government consultation paper) but conversely every click before entering that credit card number reduces the signups as we know. CC also provide some level of verification already right!

Lastly, what do you US webmasters plan to do about this or are you just going block the UK pervs ;)

I did ask the mods before hand and they approved this.

Parents need to watch their children, that's their job. I'm a parent ;)

The UK should spend it's time on legislating & aggressively policing stolen content, as you've said, the stolen content providers won't start folowing any laws. Your government needs to do its job and put the illegal content providers out of business, they are the ones providing full length free porn to children.

Legit producers make money selling porn to adults. Children seeing our work doesn't benefit us in any way.

Lazy parents & lazy government = UK digital economy bill

The UK Government needs to make stolen content tubes illegal, and vigourously enforce that with aggressive policing, that will stop children from seeing a lot of porn.

You cannot legislate morality.
However, you can sometimes harass people out of business.

Welcome PressGuy, nice to hear you're writing up on some importance to the UK, especially now leaving the EU, rules shall tighten around the balls of my fellow British followers & fans, a big shame

I run my modelcentro site, so what they do for my verification is as it is. Although, happy about this as we spent a year converting my old site to follow ATVOD rules & make my sites acceptable to their policies with images softcore pornographic on the tours (a pain in my partners ass!).

I would like to see if this age verification goes through. If so, it will create a similar effect to tubes, therefore bring more traffic to my own site if free porn needs to be verified, no problem for paid porn, & I'd do as much as I can, to stay within guidelines.

In truth, I believe Bladewire is correct! I have children, parenting checks on what our children were looking at. But if a minor is going to look at something, they're going to look when or how ever they can, even looking at a magazines found in a trashcan

No harm came from video in the 80's & I feel the British laws are all about money & income, or at least best, ATVOD was! A small organisation created to bring in an income to several people in their company.

Have a great time while you're here on GFY

If you check out Wouj Webmaster Site | Welcome to this small site for adult webmasters we keep posting about this.

The basic history is that up to around the year 2000 hard core porn was illegal in the UK.

However as like in China today you could go in many UK shops and buy it under the counter. Most was pirated.

Then around the year 2000 a porn firm took the UK to EU court stating that EU law means that you have to be able to the same products in all eu countries (or somthing along that line anyway).

As such the UK backed down.

But being jerks as the government often is they stated that it must be R18, and can only be sold in licenced sex shops. It made r18 films expensive.

Though you could legally order them outside the UK and have them sent in.

Then came the internet.

After many years of no problems, suddenly the UK government desided that the net needed to be censored.

So along came ATVOD.

They made the rules up as they went along.

They were shut down at the end of 2015.

Ofcom then took over.

The problem is:

(1) Everyone uses free porn tubes. At most you can block them if they do not comply. However this would be unpopular with the UK public.

(2) No demand for this. While the Daily mail may post the odd scare story. Most people now (unlike 20 years ago) are happy to admit to watching porn.

(3) You screw over UK firms and it gives non UK firms an advantage.

But, in truth we have just got a brand new government.

So will Mrs T May feel the need to keep this going, or just let it slide away?

Its not a vote winner and it could loose votes.

What do you mean by fail ?

Are you one of those people who believes that laws have failed unless the problem is completely eradicated ?

Interesting that your point of view is already decided before you ask the question.

The bill will change how adult material is consumed in the UK.

Considerably less children will have instant access to wall to wall free porn.

Will there be a 100% reduction in kids seeing porn ? No.

Can there ever be a 100% removal of a problem through legislation ? No.

Legislation rarely provides a complete cure - what it does in this case is define the moral line in the sand that this particular society has decided needs to be addressed.

It wont be a complete panacea, but the Bill draws a line, and it gives redress against those who cross the line. There will be modifications to the Bill before it is passed (e.g. Last resort ISP blocking, and a broader definition of the scope.), but this Bill is long overdue. The status quo is not good for society, and it is definitely not good for business.

Thanks for the info everyone. To be fair to the government they do recognise that people will subvert it. However as a kid *many years ago* we use to trade magazines and tapes.

There was some scarcity to the content as there was no easy way to duplicate it but in todays world that is no longer the case.

I mean pretty much everyone I know viewed it, it is just the delivery mechanism and huge availability has changed really
