I have read the same about those in the UK.
Though often the story is webcams. In truth its probably lazy publication, as its a case of sex sells. You can just make up stories like that with no proof and no cost and it will get lots of interest. Give it a few weeks and it will be students sell knickers, students become escorts...... We all fall for it. The big give away is often when they quote what they make. Its often a large mafde up sum of cash, and in reality would never earn that money.
