Thirty days left to live

A distant family member of mine is 92, has a medical condition, they are unable to operate, and he is expected to die in the next few weeks. I talked to him last night, first time in years. He told me it was a very sobering experience knowing he will most likely be dead in the next few weeks.

How do you face that - knowing you are about to die?

I would be thankful if I lived that long. I think I would be ready to go at that age

I am sorry to hear that Rochard! I don't think going at any time is easy, especially when it is pre planned. If it were me I would think of one thing I really want to do and get at it, along with a shiny new bottle of vodka ;)

I think that it is not possible, honestly. Maybe that is how it is supposed to be. Still, I would like to somehow really realize that I am going to die, that way so many problems would instantly become totally irrelevant.

A few weeks ago here locally a 92 year old man died - he was hit by a truck while riding his bike on his "daily ride". I would much rather go out quickly and not see it coming.

Sorry to hear that Rochard, but then again 92 years is a nice long time. Hopefully he can take comfort in knowing that he spawned a wonderful family and improved the lives of everyone he knew.

At 92 years of age I think I would rather know I have a few weeks left than it to come out of the blue. I could make sure I told the important people in my life how much I loved them and spend my last days with them. I think it might be quite comforting actually, not many people that age are aware of when it will happen.

I'm 33, if I was told tomorrow I had a month to live then I think I'd struggle hard to deal with it but at 92 I think I would have gave life everything and be quite content so long as I had my loved ones around me.

Sorry to hear about your family member, just make sure the family is there for them and spends as much quality time as possible.

such a sad story, sorry to hear about your friend & best wishes to all your friends and his family at this obvious, tragic time.

92's not a bad age, obviously we can all want for more, but at least now, he can spend his next weeks enjoying as much as he can without being pulled away from his family and friends with no knowledge.

I'm not sure which way I'd rather it, but so many times, we are not nice to the people we love and we may never see those again. Love and respect my friend!

All the best with much peace Rochard x

"sorry to hear"? Why? The guy is 92, the people i have known who were that old and on the brink of death were all fine with checking out, it's how nature works. By that time you are content with it because it's natures expiry date and your mind knows and accepts it.

Of course it's weird looking at this at a way younger age, but this is what children and teens ask. Then again, you have the intelligence of a plastic sunflower so this is quite a leap for you.

That's very depressing to have to consider.
I would be concerned about ''pain management'' as you said it was from a non-operable medical situation and I am assuming organ failure is involved.

I would close my eyes not wanting to wake up, and die in my sleep, with the least amount of conscious pain. At 92 and in failing health I would feel that I have lived long and try to die without regret -- try, I don't think that is really possible.

tragic time? Stop acting like it's a disaster a guy who is almost a century old dies... What did you expect, that he'd live another 50 years?

If you or anyone must lose a loved one, it can happen in either two ways. It can be dropped on you like a ton of bricks, out of the blue, with no hint or warning. Or you can have the opportunity to say goodbye before it happens.

Which would you rather it be?

Just like the saying goes.
"It's better to be late than never"

I guess, same thing applies to this one. Better to make the most out of the last days with the person than having regrets that you were not able to nothing at all.

I did face it. All that concerned me was it being quick and painless.

OK I dodged the bullet, didn't know it at the time.

The hardest moment was me considering the death of my wife. After her accident, the doctors told me to go away and plan my future, that meant without her. Now that was tough, so tough I couldn't think.

You're a cunt nico. You need to get a life!

Whether someone dies at 30 or 100, it's tragic when you hear how long you have left to live...

You don't see anything coming, you're completely blinded by the media, 100% fooled by the establishment with a serious "normalcy bias". For me that would be a bigger disability than a physical one and, in that kind of situation, I should probably recognise that I haven't really understood the world I inhabit and thereby cannot have lived as full a life as I could have.
