UK Government Confirm Move to Force ISPs into Blocking ?Adult? Sites

UK Government Confirm Move to Force ISPs into Blocking "Adult" Sites - ISPreview UK (cant post the actual link because I am under 30 posts) -------------------------------- I'm wondering how this will affect traffic coming from the UK. How big of an impact would that be for those that have UK as a main source of traffic?

Now, Now ... we must save our children from the evils of pornography.
Note, they are trying to play the "money" card -- just as predicted. (The threat has been vocalized before.) |

I mean, isn't Europe a particularly open country to sex? Not sure about UK, but I've always imagined the UK to be open about that.

Germany has these types of laws.
France and The Netherlands only has age laws for performers that it will enforce. BTW, Europe is not a country. The EU is a Federation of Sovereign Nations that have common agreed to "Directives" that are promulgated into law by each nation-state. There is no federal law like there is in the USA -- a USA that is one federal republic. If the European Parliament passes an age verification Directive -- each state in the EU would be required to pass a national law meeting the goals of the agreed EU Directive. |

ISP's in the UK already have safe surfing on automatically and you need to ask for it to be disabled, so it seems this legislation is redundant and should be voted out.
Seems illogical that some be forced to enter age verification for every single site they access. |

The last paragraph says it all.
Finally, anybody who wants to find and access such material will easily be able to circumvent such blocks, such as via a proxy server or VPN. Lest we not forget Google?s image search, which displays naughty content unless ?Safe Search? is enabled (will Google be blocked too?). All of these circumvention methods are easy to use and you can bet the last pound in your pocket that children above a certain age will know more about this than the rest of us. |

The piece is disingenuous to say the least.
The Bill is moving through the system of govt and it will become law in the spring. However the wording of the Bill at present does not put the onus on the ISPs to block adult content by default, rather it states the "ancillary service providers" (ISPs and payment mechanisms) will be requested to act against sites that do not put in place adequate AV mechanisms. (when brought to their attention by the regulator the BBFC) The link posted by the OP refers to an amendment put forward which may or may not be adopted after debate in the Commons. Either way AV is coming to the UK in the near future - the big players are very interested because we all know that the status quo is not sustainable and that regulation has a habit of throwing up interesting opportunities for those smart folks quick enough to see the silver lining.

The Bill will cut access to 99% of underage porn viewing. After all what use are kids to the industry ? They dont spend actual money. Unless of course you are in the business of selling page views........... And yes Twitter Google et al will all come into line. This Bill clarifies the law, removes the grey areas, and means that regulators have the power to turn you off.
