Need quick help with NameCheap please! $200 to "reinstate" 27 day expired domain
I have a domain that expired 29 days ago.
I just got notice that someone changed my whois. I just contacted NameCheap and it takes them 18 minutes on live chat to tell me that I will have to pay $200 + $10.87 to renew my 5 letter domain name! Has this happened to anyone else? What recourse do I have with them? I got the support guy on chat now it's taking him about 5 minutes to answer each question. |

Is the domain name worth more than $200 to you? If so go ahead and pay up. It is a 5 letter domain it will probably get picked up in an auction somewhere or get deleted and then picked up by dropcatching by some investor and they will ask 4-5 figures for it....

that whois means namecheap thinks its valuable and is keeping it for themselves. if you have a lot of domains with them threaten to leave.

It is an OK domain name it will go to "pre-release" auctions if they have such a thing or will be picked up 100% at drop by investors. 200$ is the cheapest possible scenario at this point if you want to keep it.

I've Google the situation and they charge the $200 renewal on domains they think they can make money on with their auction. NameCheap are greedy assholes From our conversation: "If the domain is not re-instated in this phase, it?s released to the public and becomes available approximately in 80-85 days *if not* auctioned off by upstream vendors." |

They don't use their NameCheap Registrant ID, they make you think an individual owns the domain now, not that they put it in redemption period. Shady! |

And if your domain was only 29 days past expiration you should have been able to renew it...at 30 days after expiration it enters a hold called the redemption period where they have to hold it for you for another 30 days...ICANN policy is that during that redemption period a registrar can charge you $150 charge to renew....but the first 30 days should be normal price...unless there are some weird circumstances
I would call them on that |

Leave the domains on auto renew unless you want to dump them (expire). Each domain has its own auto renew setting at Namecheap in their dashboard. Support is dim there ...

Funny thing I've noticed. I've been moving a few domains away from NameCheap and splitting them between name.com and namesilo.com
But when I click to to turn off whois privacy, or unlock a domain, or to get an EPP code sent to me, sometimes the whois privacy automatically turns back on, sometimes the domain re-locks itself, and in several cases now, the initial EPP code was incorrect and I have had to generate new ones. I did use Live Chat earlier as I was waiting for EPP codes since last night and the person I spoke to re-initialized the EPP code emails (the button to do it myself was invisible). Not sure what's going on there, but it's not exactly reassuring when you see things like this happen. If anything, it encourages me to migrate others I was not considering moving away.

I'm having this problem now switching them over. Not good. I also don't like that 27 days after a domain expires it's taken off your expired domains list! It's like they try to make you forget about your domains as much as possible and make it difficult to transfer. Why 27 days instead of the standard 30 day? shady! |

I remember reading similiar thing on here from another member. Think it was Madawgz or Oracle Porn. He lost four letter dotcom's because he claimed he didn't get any notices of them expiring.

27 days instead of the normal 29-30 days of other registrars, on top of not being consistent with $200 fee unless they think the domain is worth something, shady as fuck. |

Actually, the same thing happened to me with a hand-reg. I wasn't certain if I was going to keep it or not. And when I was going to renew support told me. $200. I kept a similiar domain, didn't bother paying $200. And now the domain is for sale at Huge Domains for $1195.

Godaddy is 25 days and then you'll have to pay the exorbitant fee to get the domain back.
