Mexico rejected US plan on 3rd-country deportees

MEXICO CITY (AP) - The Mexican government made clear to visiting U.S. emissaries that it will not accept deportees from third countries under any circumstances, the interior secretary said Friday.

Miguel Angel Osorio Chong said in an interview with Radio Formula that U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly asked Mexican officials during their Thursday visit if they would host deportees from other countries while their immigration cases are processed in the U.S.

"They can't leave them here on the border because we have to reject them. There is no chance they would be received by Mexico," he said of the deportees.

"They asked us that while their legal process is happening there if they could be here," Osorio Chong said. "And we told them that there's no way we can have them here during that process."

The visit by the U.S. secretaries came at a tense moment in U.S.-Mexico relations. President Donald Trump has carried his tough campaign talk about immigrants and factory jobs that moved to Mexico into the White House, ordering the building of a border wall, stepped up deportations and a renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement.

A memo published by the Department of Homeland Security earlier this week suggested that U.S. immigration officials could deport immigrants in the country illegally to the contiguous country they had entered from, which in the vast majority of cases would be Mexico.

Since 2014, the number of Central Americans fleeing violence and poverty captured at the U.S.-Mexico border has outnumbered the number of Mexicans, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data. In fiscal 2016, the Border Patrol apprehended 58,819 unaccompanied children and 73,888 family units along the southwest border. Most were from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala.

Last year, Border Patrol apprehended 408,870 people along the southwest border, a far cry from the more than 1.5 million annual apprehensions in 1999 and 2000. Mexico has also stepped up its immigration enforcement along its southern border, apprehending and deporting more Central American migrants trying to reach the U.S.

Osorio Chong also said Friday that if the U.S. government tries to pressure Mexico by threatening to withdraw funding from the nearly $2.5 billion Merida Initiative to fight organized crime, Mexico will let that money go.

The initiative that was started in 2008 is winding down with most remaining funding going to Mexican states implementing reforms to the justice system, Osorio Chong said. In its early years, Merida outfitted Mexico's military with helicopters and trained its security forces.

Mexico has a responsibility to secure its own borders which it fails to do. The country is nothing more than a staging area to get to US and CA.

Immigration officials instead of detaining and returning foreigners where they came from before entering Mexico, not only close their eyes, but have actually assisted the migrants with transportation and delivered them to the border cities that are next to USA.

LOL.

Sure sure push the blame elsewhere. Mexico has to secure it borders, but the US doesn't? It's not our job to secure our borders, it's Mexico's job.

Richard, while our borders are not 100% secure especially on the northern side with Canada, American's for better or worse have a reasonable amount of control over the people who are in the US.

The opposite of that statement is true for Mexico. I am not rehashing propaganda disbursed on the internet or TV, I see it for myself.

In a strange way, you have to admire Trump's lack of dignity and balls when it comes to this. Not only did he tell Mexico they were going to pay for the wall he wants to build, but also that we are basically dumping any Spanish speaking illegals we catch in their country then he sends people down there expecting the Mexicans to agree to this.

I wish I had that level of "fuck it" in me.

I've met with people who voluntarily or forcibly were deported to Mexico. Not all were originally from Mexico. They chose to park their ass near the US border so family and friends can easily come to visit them from the US. Some not all also get financial support from people they know in the US.

I agree with the idea to deport those people to Mexico that crossed by way of Mexico to the USA.

The wire transfer services like MoneyGram and Western Union surely are nervous.

Should services like WU and MG be required to verify the legal status of the sender/submitter, that is going to force the "illegals" to have the "legals" send money on their behalf.

Since there is a paper trail building up, the next "logical" step would be for the IRS at some point require the senders/submitters to prove the money was theirs, and they weren't just "laundering money" on behalf of an "illegal".

A reasonable percentage of illegal foreigners entered the US by crossing by land from Mexico. Mexico should maintain some reasonable control over who comes into their country also. Yet they don't.

Regarding any drug flow being reduced, there is a positive and negative side.
Manufacturing now is "Made in the USA"
Higher cost of the local supply

If ever there were less cases of people either being victims of, or guilty of a crime related to drugs, there is a corrupt system both public and private that no longer could profit in the USA. They all would take an enormous financial hit. This includes but certainly not limited to the: courts, police, jails, intervention programs, bail bondsmen, etc.

Make sense?

Part of that is proximity to the border. If INS finds an illegal from Guatemala in Ohio they shouldn't be dumping them in Mexico.

Mexico transports those who arrive at the southern boarder to their northern boarder. They should be taking those people back.
