I have a pile of domain names with them. And I routinely get hit up to buy lists from brokers. I've never seen one from NameSilo, which would seem to go against their own business plan.

Just curious, have you bothered to contacted them about this to confirm it was not just a mistake? Or was it just more convenient, a la the "GFY Mentality", to come here first and make another thread before confirming anything?

If you're talking about spam to buy a similar domain, that's going to happen anywhere you've got names.

Exactly.

But I meant from brokers trying to sell me domains who scrape the registry sites to find similar names to those I own. Some go so far as to "imitate" the registrar by cloaking their webmaster referral to that registry.

When in doubt, it's ALWAYS a better idea to reach out to a company directly first, as opposed to running to a board to create potentially unnecessary drama.

So you received an email, supposedly from Namesilo, with all your personal info and it said you have an unlocked domain that is due for renewal in December?

That would explain the physical junk mail I've been getting.

FWIW Network Solutions, Name.com, 1and1 and Netfirms are no different.

The only registrars I'm using that haven't sold my info are GoDaddy (surprisingly) and Namecheap.

not too difficult to see why OP's role in the biz is as a sigwhore on a board mostly populated by hobbyists.

I used to get actual paper mail sent to my Pobox or even home address, stating domains that i own, and how i need to renew them for $70/year.

These are semi-scammers, not sure how they get ahold of our infos, whether it be hacked info, or what. But i highly doubt Namesilo are selling customer lists

It's is relatively easy to script a whois bot and to make the requests to different registry whois servers randomly.

I have done that for some projects ...

NameCheap is shit now. Never seeing their $6 or so renewal coupons always $9 & change.

They are crooks expiring your domains @27 says now instead of 30. Here's a thread about what I went through with them, real time. Synopsis below:

NameCheap wanted $200 to renew my "expired" domain that slipped through during the Christmas holidays. They also expire in less than 30days now it's 27 days. How did I find out it expired? I got an email that my domain had been transferred to a random person.

I freaked out contacted NameCheap "live" support (that takes 5 minutes+ to answer each question.) after about 40 minutes I find out that NAMECHEAP is the 3rd party my domain was transferred to, even though their company info is nowhere on the registration.

Follow this link for the rest of the story.

Fuck NameCheap and their shitty "customer service" and scheme to make back off 27 day "expired" domains.

Looks like Name.com is doing this too now.. or similar.. unsolicited brokering of names:

Title: We found a great domain for you: blah.org

This Premium Domain would be great for you: blah.org

If you're looking to expand your online presence and reach new audiences, you might be interested in blah.org. The domain name is currently available, and it's a perfect compliment to blah.com

Never remember getting these before. at least from a legit company like Name.com..

Most of the spam offering similar domains for sale are from flippers of domains in RedemptionPeriod or PendingDelete. If you want to fuck with them, express interest in buying, wait for them to acquire the domain after it drops and then tell them afterwards you lost interest to leave them holding the bag. Occasionally, it's from a domainer or broker looking to sell a domain.

Paper bills for $70/year sounds like they're from scammers like iDNS (Internet Domain Name Services), that offer search engine listing renewals, not domain renewals.

You do know that NameCheap operates on an enom backend, right? Did you try transferring out as an option to the $200 redemption fee?

Their interface won't let you transfer out and their live online support says you have to pay $200 before they'll do it for you, now they're trying to sell my Zoreo.com domain they stole at 27 days for $4,975 fuck them never again with Namecheap.

That's what I get for using a Russian owned domain registrar #ThanksGFY

But seriously, thanks for trying to help I appreciate that

You're welcome. NameCheap/enom expired inventory is auctioned off at NameJet.
