Journalist looking to interview folks about the business side of the adult industry

Hi there,

I'm working on a story for VICE about the business side of the adult industry. It's a topic that doesn't get talked about very much, at least not in the mainstream press that I've seen. And I don't think most people are aware of the parts of the industry that aren't actual content production, despite it being a huge part of the industry. I'm wondering if anyone here would be interested in talking to me about it. I'm still not sure on the angle of the story. Right now I'm just doing preliminary research, but any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Why bother?
Just search the Internet and I'm sure you'll come up with the same old bullshit that all the media outlets like to print. None of you are really interested in the straight dope and the "publicity" gained from helping the media doesn't really do a thing to boast profits.

Hi! I'm interested in the "straight dope," but the story isn't about pornography, whether it's good or bad, or anything like that. It's about the tech back-end that allows the industry to work, and all of the various parts of the industry that regular people aren't aware of. People are aware of what porn stars do for a living, but I don't think they know much about all of the stuff that goes on here. Again, I don't know what all that stuff is yet, which is why I'm here.

Well, I got my bachelor's degree in journalism, but other than that I'm just a working journalist. I've worked for Newsweek, Vice and various other places. If you google "Taylor Wofford" my work will come up (I can't post links yet, unfortunately).

I'd like to reiterate that I'm not going into this with any particular agenda. I don't think porn is "bad" (though I do think some of it can get pretty gross and I'm not sure how I feel about that stuff), but the thrust of the story is that the porn industry is huge and yet little is known about it, at least by the readers of Vice. I'm trying to fix that.

Whatever someone claims to earn...

Ask to see their tax returns and take a good look at what kind of car they drive. Because regardless of what role or title someone may have the fact remains that more than 90% of the people in this industry are borderline broke. Plus a lot of production houses, pay sites, tube sites, cam studios, etc. will pay a girl to say she's making a truckload of money when she really isn't.

To make matters more difficult you should be aware that even when someone does have money you should be cautious because there's a fair amount of money laundering going on in this industry.

car is about the last criteria for anybodys success - easy to lease a Porsche as business expense and then stiff the leasing company when you go bankrupt

You're absolutely right.

I also doubt anyone is going let someone inspect their tax returns. My point is you just got to keep your eyes open and do your best to figure out if they're really that wealthy or if it's just bullshit.

It seems most people's awareness of the content production part of the business has been shaped by the sensationalized coverage of the mainstream media--often during a sweeps period to boost ratings.

It would be nice to see some accurate reporting on shooting porn, but I get it: TV news segments on how mundane production actually is--even with pixelated naked human females running around--is hardly must-see TV.

Hello. very odd objective you have there. you want to write a fact based piece without a political agenda? sorry but you have no future as a journalist.

just fake up a raped porn-star story, tie it to trump & russians, & you will get a lot more exposure/job offers than reporting facts.

Apart from production and publication, sites, there's little else to tell other than webmastering stuff which is pretty much the same as other online industries. Most webmasters are using the same techniques they would use for selling other products, which is why they can switch from recorded porn to cams, to dating, to pills, to mainstream. And many of them are very small. The main traffic sites are Tubes which give porn away much like Youtube gives films away to get traffic to sell ad space.

That applies to the offline porn industry as well, except back in the day the police were far more interested in what we did and the prosecutions were more often. We produce a product, market and sell it. Production has the greatest difference from producing other products. Producers have to deal with knowing their product intimately, finding models, dealing with them, shooting it correctly for the intended market, then marketing and selling.

I've been in porn since the mid-60s. Skype me paulmarkham1
