Should HIV crime laws be overturned?

Notice how the article starts out with a sob story rather that focus on HIV+ men who go on treatment, test HIV- due to such a low viral load count and then tell their hookups they are HIV- (because that's technically how they tested).

There is a whole sub culture of these HIV+ faggots who are pushing a culture of shaming HIV- gays who won't have sex with them. I read a blog post by one of them once who said it was an unreasonable part of HIV prevention measures to not have sex with HIV+ men since the transmission rate when condoms are used is low.

HIV Crime Laws: Historical Relics or Public Safety Measures?

Robert Suttle clearly remembers telling his boyfriend that he was HIV positive the night they met. But after they split, three quarrel-filled months later, that became a point of contention: His ?ex? pressed charges against him.

Suttle?s home state, Louisiana, is one of 33 states with laws that can be used to prosecute people living with HIV. And in Louisiana, intentionally exposing someone to HIV/AIDS is a felony punishable by up to 11 years in prison.

Because he wanted to put the whole ordeal behind him, Suttle accepted a plea bargain in 2009 and ended up doing 6 months in prison. He said he found out too late that pleading guilty meant registering as a sex offender wherever he goes.

Now some states are looking to either repeal such laws or reduce their severity. At issue is the balance between protecting public health and protecting the civil rights of individuals living with HIV.

Gay men aren't the only people with HIV. Some don't inform their partners or take precautions just as some female hookers don't do the same.

I don't blame the victim -- but -- they need to be proactive and safe. Never assume your partner is negative. It's your responsibility to be safe, too

It's not a death sentence as it was before. People live full, happy and successful lives with caution, meds and choices

There are other communicable diseases around that could kill you. They won't create laws for every scenario.
