:stop Uber self-driving car kills pedestrian in first fatal autonomous crash

Sad News!

A self-driving Uber SUV struck and killed 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg as she walked her bicycle across a street in Tempe, Arizona, Sunday night, according to the Tempe police. The department is investigating the crash.

A driver was behind the wheel of the Volvo XC90 SUV at the time, the police said.

"The vehicle involved is one of Uber's self-driving vehicles," the Tempe police said in a statement. "It was in autonomous mode at the time of the collision, with a vehicle operator behind the wheel."

Autonomous mode means the car is driving on its own. During tests, a person sits behind the wheel as a safeguard.

Uber is conducting tests of autonomous vehicles in Arizona, Pittsburgh, Toronto and other areas. Uber said it has stopped testing the vehicles throughout the United States and Canada.

I know a computer driven car should be able to stop for a pedestrian easily...but how the fuck is a computer going to have a human driving sixth sense that's cultivated over a lifetime of being in every kind of situation? I can just think of some downtown traffic I was in a couple days ago that would make self driving car short circuit.

That's the promise of AI.

They are already proven to be safer then people drivers. Over a million miles of data.

AI may be able to predict a bad situation and react more quickly than a human driver, but it can't bypass the laws of physics (eg stopping distance), or read the mind of nearby pedestrians. For all we know this person walked out from behind a parked car.

That's exactly what happened. But still, there's that sixth sense I was talking about. When I'm driving down the highway, other drivers are talking to me and I can predict (most of the time) what they're going to do. There's taligaters, weavers, non-turn signal people, drifters etc all telling me how they're going to behave. I'm wondering if a computer can read all of these things going in it's general radius, as well as watching the big picture a few cars ahead. That's what keeps you from having accidents.

Exactly!

Humans can spot kids in an area and anticipate them coming into the street.
Humans can detect an angry driver and take extra caution.

How do self driving cars handle road rage? Do they stop and pull over or keep driving and
slamming on brakes when the "rager" keeps cutting them off?

The question has to be how many miles have these cars driven unaided and how many accidents have been reported and then how many would you expect in human driven cars?..

There would have to be millions of automated cars driving in various conditions , age and state of repair, before any meaningful statistics can even be considered.
Think about how many years you have driven without a wreck?
We have to at least test the cars for that many years to make a comparison.
It can't be judged by miles traveled.

The Uber human driver in the car monitoring the driving didn't do any better in this situation than the autopilot.

I wouldn't call him a "driver", driver "drives", this was just a person sitting in the driver's seat bored out of his mind watching as the car drives itself.

I can't think of a worse job, the boredom, sitting in the same position for hours at a time, the possibility that the car will do something stupid and kill you or kill someone else exposing you to potential liabilities, etc.
