RIP passwords: new web standard designed to replace login method

RIP passwords: new web standard designed to replace login method.

Quote:
WebAuthn will eliminate need for passwords by moving to methods of authentication such as biometrics, says web standards controller.

A new web standard is expected to kill passwords, meaning users will no longer have to remember difficult logins for each and every website or service they use.

The Web Authentication (WebAuthn) standard is designed to replace the password with biometrics and devices that users already own, such as a security key, a smartphone, a fingerprint scanner or webcam.
Our bank has been using this method for years, they send an SMS with a code. But it's still great news.

So I bought a new iPhone in January, and couldn't transfer the Google Authenticator data to the new phone. I had to start over with each site.

Sites that have implemented Google Authenticator don't have a good means to change from one phone to the next. I have had to ask them to disable, so I can re-enable.

Sites that do the SMS code, usually don't have a means to use multiple phone numbers. e.g. when I am in the US I have a +1 SIM card in my phone. When in the UK and EU, I have a +44 SIM card.

Did you read the article? SMS is only one option, there's a lot more to choose from.

What happens if the device is stolen? I wouldn't want someone to be able to log in to my bank account just by taking my phone. And something like a webcam or fingerprint scanner is probably going to be gamed - and then what do you do? Change your face?

I invented usb key 10 years ago, way before google authenticator and any other method. And as rowan mentioned, it have weakness - if you lose your usb key/phone/whatever, you could lock yourself out permanently. This is way i came with other method which is cloud based and fully safe. So you can travel anywhere, work anywhere, and still be safe from any compromise.

This. I went to Chaturbate last night to look up payment info in my aff account and was forced to do 2 step. Problem is, there are several people that need to use the account. there are ways to get the 2 step on more than 1 phone, but it's a pain.

I rather have had the choice.

Also, biometrics is dangerous in the states. It's been ruled that police can't force you to give up a password that's stored in your memory but they can force you to to unlock your device or whatnot with biometrics. So easier, yes but actually a lot less secure (there's twins that have actually managed to log into the others account).

It's not your whole fingerprint, it's part of one fingers print, not the whole thing.

If that scares you, you can use a random fake fingerprint generator to create a print.

Why are you also a criminal afraid of one fingerprint giving you away?

You should have left the Internet in the 90s if you're scared of people knowing who you are. Everyone online is being monitored.

Biometrics is for people who are ten times dumber than a common crook who will cut

This is just the evolution of technology, very predictable. I remember the first time I was presented with a digital signature at the grocery store - I was in shock! Also, at that time, very concerned about my privacy. LOL

It's not because I am a criminal Paul. It's about something you seemingly have never heard of: the principle of the thing.

That argument - which is used when people question security cameras or ANY Big Brother-type intrusions into privacy - is made by idiots who think these things do not apply to THEM. "First they took the Jews, then they took the handicapped, then they took the political dissenters...and when they came for me there was no one left to say anything."

Sound familiar?

Brad
no sorry - this is the end of privacy.

did you read anywhere that google facebook and some other big data grabbers at the last summit of g20 have suggested that data should BASICALLY no longer be bought?

I am sure you didnīt because it was not a topic in the press and if you tell this story to anybody they will react like: OHH what a nice idea !!!

but this is exactly the way brainwashing works.
tell people something of what the THINK it is good.

but WHY for fuck google and facebook etc. SUGGESTING a law what is obviously AGAINST their own business model?

I will tell you why:

At the moment every company is able to buy data from all this guys what brings them into the status they they can use this data without any further relationship. If google does not sell them favebook with do it and at the end the data buyers are independent.

if sales of data are generally prohibited the only ones who can work with this data are the owners of this data (Google, Facebook and co)

to reach the person behind this data is than ONLY possible if you go over their services
and "rent" this service (but not the data) whenever you want to contact them.

as this big companies will have all the necessary equipment and security they will also be the "best option" for the governments, the police, the financial offices etc....

with other words: at the end THEY will be the owners of our data and the ones where ALL
data from us are centralized.
they can or can not allow a company to communicate with the persons behind the data.

google, facebook and co will be our new government because they will know MORE about us then anyone in the world and they are LEGALIZED to use this data for whatever they want.

nice strategy - and billions of people will help to realize it.

People hate to mention the "F" word but I will do it here: Fascism.

But what IS Fascism? No, it's not Hitler or Mussolini or Stalin.
It's this: when a Government and corporations meld into one entity.
The Corps do the dirty work for the Government who can claim they are for "the People" while they legally allow PRIVATE COMPANIES to control us.

But who controls the Corporations? People from the Government who go and work there! It's then a revolving door between Gov't and Corps.

Sound familiar? Now make it SOFT (not like Hitler), like you are dealing with children (which you are), and slowly, slowly, slowly the Fascist Net closes in.

Sound familiar?

indeed it sounds familar - this is why i always try to look under the plate and not just what is on it.

these things are getting dangerous meanwhile.
data = power.
you can influence elections and brainwash people so much that they hate each other without reason. you can make them become lemmings - as more complicated it is as easier they are to control with easy answers.

i love the internet but mankind needs 200 years more to be intelligent enough to understand that this technology makes them to victims because they use it like a toy but they do not have the smallest clue of the power and the influence behind it.

the internet has made people so lazy that they do not think anymore but get their answers from google or elsewhere. And these answers do not end up as neutral information but as a brain substitute. people who have no points of view can simply adapt some.

i guess that the average world IQ dropped 20 points since internet started.

Total agreement. Here in New York City - supposedly the best and brightest people, most successful and smartest, etc - and everywhere people are getting lazier and more stupid by the day.

The worst part? No one seems to care. They just shrug their shoulders, say "this is the way things are I guess" and just go along like lemmings. Very sad.

But if I can get them to buy my porn that makes life a little better.
