Do You Feel Like Shit After Naps?

It doesn't always happen, but it's becoming more and more common. I work from home and usually take a short nap (20- 40 minutes) in the afternoon. I will lay down in bed to read something but before I know it my eyes will close shut. The idea of a napping and the sensation I get as I fall into sleep is wonderful, irresistible – but waking up is horrible. I feel pressure on my head, as if I'm stuck to the pillow, groggy, thirsty, muddled, etc. You could say I feel much worse than before the nap.

Occasionally I'll have the nap where I feel fresh and refreshed afterward, although these are rare. This stuff only happens during naps, never during nighttime sleep. I'm thinking it may have something to do with my mind and body not being completely relaxed as I know I have responsibilities pending for that day. Or perhaps it has to do with the noises and light of the day.

Anyone else feel this?

I haven't taken a nap since I was six.

Maybe you're napping too long?

If I nap it's for about 20 minutes. I feel great afterwards... but if I nap for an hour or 2, I feel even more tired and don't want to do anything for the rest of the day.

Maybe your nap is too short. I sleep about 5 hours a night and then nap for at least an hour in the afternoon. If I feel like shit, I have a coffee. 20-40 mins seems kinda short to me.

I never nap during the day just for those reasons.

I do not drink or do any type of drugs but I'll wake up feeling nauseous / still kinda tired as it takes time for my mind to get back into reality.
In the winter months when it gets dark early - if I nap when it's light out and wake up when it's dark, I'll be like wtf is it 5 in the evening or is it 5 O'clock in the morning all the while trying to get my head straight.

On top of that, when used to nap, napping ruins my daily go to bed time. Everyone in the house is sleeping as I'm downstairs at 2am eating chips watching some old George Raft movie.

Actually, once I get up and splash cold water on my face, I feel much better. It's just that moment when I open my eyes and try to get up that's killing me. It's almost like I feel drugged.

I'm not a coffee drinker.

I used to have the same problem until I stopped napping. Whenever I feel the urge to nap, I just get up and walk around or do something else.

Maybe its your diet.

Once I decided to cut out all junk food, and eat only fruits and veggies. After a few days, I noticed that when I'd wake up, I'd literally hop out of bed, fully energized. I'd never woken up without feeling groggy before.

After eating a fat free diet for a period of time...once you go back to eating anything with fat in it, you can feel it coat the inside of your mouth, your esophagus, and feel it sit like a rock in the pit of your stomach. Any food with fat in it fairly disgusting if you're not used to it.

TLDR: maybe its your diet

I eat pretty healthy. No junk food, drink only water, very few sweet stuff. This problem ONLY happens during daytime naps. At night I sleep and wake up relatively well.

I had the same problem in the past.

Try a new pillow, I have 2-3 good ones, so I could use a different one once in a while

But the underlying problem here is IMHO stress, your brain & body is most likely not able to relax fully while you're asleep.
I've changed my lifestyle, and it took months for my body to fully recover from those symptoms.

sleep cycle is around 90 minutes. If you sleep 40 mins. You're cut right in the middle and it's gona be painful. Better do 90 minutes nap or just skip it if you do not have that much time. Will be more beneficial for you.

you have sleep inertia, you can tweak your nap to adjust for it. Usually shorten nap time.

I love naps and learned to treasure them after getting a child. For 6 months or so, all the sleep I got was naps
Haven't used an alarm clock except for red-eye flights in 2 years

If you have less than an hour, it is not worth the nap time. You'll only feel more tired. Try using those Sleep Cycle apps that will wake you up during the light stages of sleep.
