What Do You Guys Think about The Deuce? (Show)

Never seen a television show or movie tackle the adult industry like this before. It's so explicit -- there's nudity and graphic sex practically in every episode.

It was created by David Simon, same guy who made The Wire.

Pretty solid show. Though there doesn't seem to be a straightforward plot (like in the Wire), the show is highly entertaining and everything looks real and believable. I don't think I've seen threads here about it.

Anyone watched this show about the sex trade industry in Times Square NYC during the 1970s?

I watched a few episodes and it was too dark, too depressing and had an obvious agenda that overshadowed everything. I really wanted to like it's such a shame.

Yeah David Simon can be pretty heavy handed with his political views.

That and it seems part of his agenda was to take the joy out of all the sex scenes and make everyone involved in production crooks, liars & manipulators which to me, producing since 1999 was a foreign concept. I've always had a blast shooting never fuck over talent and have all docs signed before shoots. A lot of us who started during that time are just regular folks that saw in opportunity.

I guarantee you that David Simon wont evolve the series into the late nineties and the massive influx of mom & pop porn production that flourished when we could post content directly online and bypass the DVD industry that was ripping production houses off. It doesn't seem that the fun times and innocent times are on David Simon's agenda. His agenda seems to be all about abuse, illegality, etc. and it overshadows the reality of the industry too much , from my perspective.

I thought it was awesome.

When I was a kid we used to cut school, take the bus to NYC, and check out the peep shows.

Of course we had no idea what was going on behind the scenes. It's amazing to see how the industry went from peep shows to VHS, and then of course to DVD and online.

But the show takes place during the 1970s in Times Square. Not sure if you're not familiar with the story or what, but it shows how a lot of prostitutes migrated from street prostitution to starring in porn movies. It also seems to center on the relationships between pimps and whores. The massage parlors they show are all owned by the mafia. It's only normal that they show criminal elements.

I may be wrong, but I don't think this is the same porn production industry you got started in.

How far from the 70's does The Deuce venture? I only watched the first few episodes and assume it's just going to stay in the dismal depressing 70s.

I'm pretty sure it's going to be all about the 70s.

The one thing I don't like about the show is that there is basically no plot, just a bunch of sub-plots that got stringed together. It kind of goes nowhere to be honest, but it's a lot of fun to watch.

That's generally how Simon writes. What is The Wire plot about? It's mostly a russian novel put together into episodes and generally the characters are drawn out pretty well, but take a while to get into.

The wire is boring as fuck the first 4 episodes. So is game of thrones really... Not as much when you go back obviously but out of the gate? Novels take time to build around and develop--this story wont be any different.

But The Wire has a main plot: The Barksdale investigation. The Deuce doesn't have that at all, and neither do any of the other series he's written. For the record I don't find the first episodes of The Wire boring at all. As for Game of Thrones, I never liked it and doubt I ever will.
