(CNSNews.com) - The federal government spent $2,198,468,000,000 in the first six months of fiscal 2019 (October through March), which is the most it has spent in the first six months of any fiscal year in the last decade, according to the Monthly Treasury Statements.

The last time the government spent more in the October-through-March period was in fiscal 2009, when it spent $2,326,360,180,000 in constant March 2019 dollars.

Fiscal 2009 was the fiscal year that began with President George W. Bush signing a $700-billion law to bailout the banking industry in October 2008 and then saw President Barack Obama sign a $787-billion stimulus law in February 2009.

At the same time that the Treasury was spending the most it has spent in ten years, it was also taking in less in tax revenue than it has in the past five years.

Dropping taxes to stimulate growth is a stupid idea. Money spent is money spent, be it the Government or private person. The only difference is the super rich who hide their money from the government.

Like the owners of Amazon, Google, Apple, etc. And the way they do it proves the tax system is badly out of date. Luxury items should carry a higher rate of tax, import the goods and still apply a higher rate of tax, move production offshore and then pay more tax on the imported goods when sold.

Lowing taxes on companies doesn't make companies expand and hire more people. Companies expand and hire more people when it's profitable to do so.

My wife and I own a bricks & mortar business. Hiring more employees at our main location isn't going to increase our profit. We hire enough employees to cover our needs. It's not like "You gave us a tax break, I can hire more employees". If we hired another ten employees they would have nothing to do.

This is not true at all. Most of us said "This is horrible" but it had to be done.

People were losing their jobs and then losing their homes left and right. We had to do something. In fact, I personally benefited from some of the programs Obama created - the "save your home" loan program. We couldn't let the automotive industry fail either - millions of jobs would have been gone.

Obama did what he had to do to fix our country. He saved jobs, he saved our homes; He cut unemployment from an all time high to 4%. Trump is just spending money because he can.

I would actually okay with Trump spending money if it was for infrastructure projects. I wish our federal government would come in and rebuilt all of our interstate freeways. We already have freeways that connect major cities - San Fran to LA, LA to Vegas and Phoenix, but.... They are horrible - two lanes in each direction. They should be six lanes in each direction, and also have high speed rail and trains.

No... he isn't giving shit to infrastructure rebuilding, in fact he and Republicans cut that funding and are forcing states to cover money that the federal govt used to provide. He told states to add tolls to highways to cover the costs..

It was also Bush's tax cuts becoming permanent and Bush's Iraq and Afghanistan wars that accounted for it. Obama’s debt actually grew at a slower annual rate than any of the Republican presidents and the deficit was actually in positive territory a few times under him.
