We reached the tipping point about 3 years ago where more people access websites via their smart phones or tablets than via desktop or laptops. So for me it's about 65% mobile vs. 35% desktop.

I think it's se traffic only metric with value since non-se traffic could contain a lot of bot traffic which affect numbers.

Every website have bots on it, impossible to avoid them.

Impossible to avoid every single last one but I block 99% of them. My favourites are the Bing bots, they are obvious because they have MSIE in the user agent and nobody uses that any more.

Bing bot makes itself even more obvious, just look for "Bing bot" in the user agent. If you are blocking all MSIE you are missing some very valuable traffic.

No - they don't seem to be doing it so much now but a while ago they were sending hits with Bing as the referrer with a relevant query string and a normal looking UA, but when you look up the IP address it turns out to be a MSNBOT address range. If you didn't know you'd be thinking you were doing rather well in Bing search results when you weren't.


Actually I just checked a few hits from Bing in my stats and they definitely still are doing it.

Ours are pretty close. 69% when checking real-time right now.

Bots are quite complex thing , it's not just search engine bots, but bots masked as regular traffic, and you cant block traffic which have almost zero difference from regular traffic. Only way to detect them is by behavior, for example if they click multiple links in short time, it's a bot.
