What kind of scam is godaddy running?
So I had a few old domains (not in use) left with godaddy that I knew were about to, or were already, going to expire.
So I login and sure enough, three domains expired in June and another expired a few weeks ago. For the hell of it I go and try to renew the expired domains from June (they are listed as recoverable). Those scumbags at godaddy wanted 80.00 per domain for a recovery fee. There was no way in hell I was paying 240.00 in recovery fees for 3 domains I didnt really care all that much about other than sentimental value. Figuring I didnt have much to lose, I login to my namecheap account and wanted to see if I could at least transfer my domains out. Wouldnt you know it, not only was I able to transfer my domains away from godaddy, I was able to renew all 3 domains for a grand total of 35.00. What kind of crap are they trying to pull over there? |

It’s a free market. Godaddy are free to have any prices they want (and think they can get people to accept) and you are free to buy at that price or decline. There will always be people who doesn’t know or understand better and who will happily pay the $80 per domain recovery fee.

Yeah I get that, but godaddy taking advantage of their predominantly non-tech savvy client base just seems scummy. |

It could be worse. At least they aren't running that old registrar scam where they reserve domain names many people search for.

i lik 2 gocrappy, but i wont register ANYTHING at godaddy...
Years ago, someone wrote an actual paper letter to them, claiming to be me and saying I was moving across country. Apparently I had 'forgotten' my login details and needed access to my account in order to 'Update my new information' Lo and behold, without even using the email on my account to check, they sent the login details to the imposter who had free access and caused chaos in my account. Admittedly, GD sorted it out, but I never got an apology, so I moved to namecheap and I never looked back... Not the cheapest registra I know, but never a single issue in over 15 years... |

Why are you mad that they turn a profit you had reminders you knew it was expiring and it did.

All of the registrars have redemption fees similar to that.

Take it from someone who learned the hard way, Godaddy is right, and lets face it, they offer a really good service at really low prices. You forgot the domain, they reminded you, and now you have to pay the premium to get it back.
Anyway as you said, these are domains you don't really want, so no reason to lose any sleep over it. But if they are domains you are sure you will develop in the near future and or to protect your brand, $80 is peanuts. Just pay it and you're set.

Margins in domains are very small, basically a loss leader for many companies. Go Daddy is quite aggressive though. We have been pulling over quite a few clients from Go Daddy lately.

Not sure if it is an actual practice over there or just a coincidence, but a buddy used to be in marketing and was checking out the availability of some domain names. After seeing what was available and for what price, they kicked it around and then went back a couple days later to make the purchase. The price had gone up for the names they had looked at.

what?? low prices? yeah, 10 years ago when there were a lot of coupons available, now they are one of the most expensive domain registrars, .com renewals are now $17.99 and they also charge a fee for privacy for non-EU customers. I am transferring my domains to Namecheap. |

Anyone considering a move should seriously consider NameSilo. Better prices than just about anyone, and free WHOIS privacy, DNS, Domain Parking, Portfolio Management, etc. NO upsells. And a clean, simple management interface. It's what a Registrar should be.
NameSilo is a breath of fresh air compared to what it's like at NameCheap, GoDaddy, Dynadot, and Moniker. Name.com is decent, but certainly more expensive. In my opinion, NameSilo beats them all hands down. It's not even close.

Do you think that advertising on TV or sports events is free? Profit on domain sales is low. He earns additional services. Who do you think is paying for these ads in the stadium?
IF YOU SEE THE ADVERTISEMENT ON A MATCH - A COMPETITION, EVENT, AVOID THE COMPANY, BECAUSE YOU PAY FOR THESE ADVERTISING.

They know they have you by the short hairs if you let a good domain expire and will pay the price to keep it. I use auto renew on the handful I have over there. I transfered the good domains out of there long ago.

I remember that a company kept track of domain searches and then charged premium prices for them. It was reported here and people tried to grab stupid domain names for ten bucks. Lbdjfgteoriit.com type names and then a day later it was fifty bucks or more. It is obvious that they were doing it and then someone found a list of names that had been checked which updated hourly. Domain “thieves” would grab the names and hold them hostage. Why they would publicize the list of names checked, publicly, was never answered and the thinking was that employees were grabbing the names and holding them hostage for big bucks.
I believe someone here was involved in grabbing the name and someone registered some domains to see who would grab them. Big controversy here and I cannot forget the arguments and trouble it caused. Upsells were everywhere and registration became a pain. Internic charged six dollars for registration and companies offered them for a few bucks. They had to make up the loss in upsells. Newbies fell for it and spent a lot to get listed in search engines. Then the auto submit sites came up to knock down upsells. I’m remembering sex dot com and the million dollar theft of the domain. That’s another topic n

They recently wanted like $55 for simple .com 1-year renewal from me, not expired yet. I transferred it away to a better place, and renewed with new registrar for like 9 bucks.

I compare the many, many, many horror stories over the years about godaddy, and those who insist all is well to this: Some (lots of) drunk drivers never get pulled over, or have any kind of accident, ever. Yet getting behind the wheel drunk as fuck is still a very, very bad idea. |

Godaddy is terrible, everything is overpriced.. Dropped a couple of mediocre domains and as soon as I did they turned them into premium domain worth thousands of dollars, which they really weren't.
Any domain i buy i transfer away from godaddy |

At least you can still recover yours.. Name.com just pinched one of mine that was still in grace..
Just a courtesy beware: Name.com is reluctant to nail down a specified grace period like others do. Suffice to say based on their arrogant 'its-ours-now' response it is 25 days max. Also, the fact it was sitting in the checkout may have alerted their algorithms. |

And I know of no other registrar that demands $80 to recover expired names in grace, or charges their general renewal fees. For some unknown reason, a lot of domainers (i.e. domain squatters) insist on using Scamdaddy. And yes, NameCheap is the best, I've been using them for years. |

I stopped using godaddy on first sign of trouble which was around 10 years ago.Same with moniker. Been with name dot com since then and no problems so far.
