Would You Help The Disabled ...?

... if there were a fire in a building that you were in and warnings said not to use the elevators, would you stop and help carry down the stairs the people in wheelchairs?

I never gave it much thought until yesterday. My doctor appointment was in a building with elevators and stairs only as it’s an old building. Sign said to use the stairs in case of fire. I began thinking that I’d use my arms to pull me down the stairs slowly and hope no one stepped on me.

But quadriplegic people can’t use their arms and they are stuck. Fire department people are trying to help I’m sure but would you stop and help?

My chair weighs a lot more than me, about 250 pounds with attached battery. I’d say screw the chair and take me only. Someone could push it down one step at a time but then you’d block people from leaving.

I wondered how many people would help or just figure someone else could help since they want to leave fast.

Scary thought. From now on, any building that I’m in without a ramp or emergency exit for wheelchairs is going to hear my views. If I’m told not to worry, I’m going to say I just want to be prepared.

If my life is in danger and i see only the option to help myself, i save myself.

But if you are not to heavy i could carry someone around my neck like firefighters do., wouldn't cost much time. i don't care about the wheelchair. If someone tried to carry a wheelchair on the stairs, i would push them away.

I'm in a wheelchair and you would not believe the amount of issues I have had with elevators.

In general I have found that for the most part people are good and are very willing to help if you aren't an asshole. Also pack mentality kicks in real quick when people see others helping.

Just search youtube for videos like "Hero"... Some of them will make you cry even if you are bustard pimp. And your story is not even a act of bravery. I am sure most would help too.

I would carry someone down for sure, not sure I'd make a second trip up though as I have health issues that would probably require me to be carried out before long.

I never gave too much thought about handicapped parking or handicap-accessible anything until my father got sick with cancer. He had lung cancer with mets to the brain and got too weak to walk. So he still wanted to go out to eat, movies etc., so we got him a wheel chair.

Holy hell, talk about a new found respect.

Funny thing about that. I'm so used to the poor behavior that it doesn't phase me anymore. But my friends... my friends get absolutely furious when they see somebody abusing handicap parking spots.

I never gave it a lot of thought and most people are that way. When my dad was confined to the bed and wheelchair, I spoke with mom and she had a folding ramp installed from the front porch to the yard. He could walk but occasionally he couldn’t and they’d have to grab his oxygen and other medical equipment fast. Strap it to his lap, push out and then he’s okay.

The ramp is still there but I’m not able to get through the doors because the old house has walls blocking the room needed to maneuver the wheelchair.

I wondered how people managed back then with narrow entryways and walls in the way.
