a friend of mine got into it and claimed to have some early success; I did plenty of research and gave it a very serious, dedicated effort for about 9 months, but I couldn't get ahead in the long term. my friend, who wound up getting so involved with it he later began coaching others, eventually quit day trading due to "the fees eating up my profits." So evidently it wasn't profitable for him either.

I think the notion of any long term (year to year) profitability from day trading on a home pc over dial-up is just a pipe dream used to sell day trading courses. You're competing against firms with fast computers and algorithms written in C, with the hardware located as close to the trading floor as possible to minimize response times. Running TradeStation on a home pc via DSL/cable just isn't competitive.

A very good friend of mine owns a forex brokerage and he would show me all these accounts and how fast the brokers would just drain them. He told me in 20 yrs he's never seen anyone make any money. They all lose. That's why when crucifissio tells me he's day trading bitcoin and making bank I just laugh.

Well , he is not far from true, FOREX is something where people mostly lose money. Tho, crypto is better due volatility paradox, where you can make money much faster.

You must be confused. I'm not talking about buying bitcoins. I like cryptos. I'm talking about FOREX trading which has crazy risks.

FOREX is a losers game. Like 99% lose money and if you give them enough time that 1% will lose it too. The only people that make money are banks and brokerage firms. He just hears currency trading and thinks cryptocurrencies not realizing FOREX is the biggest market in the world trading 5 TRILLION daily.

Day trading anything is hard. If it was easy, casinos wouldn't be in business.

And you need a large amount that you can risk. Im talking 100K or more.

WTF are you talking about? Currency shifts maybe 5% over long times, and that is a LOSS.

Currency = daytrade
Stock = Long + daytrade
Options = Long + daytrade
Bonds = long

some people do longer term currency trades - days, weeks, months etc. It's not unheard of. I doubt if many are holding for longer than that, or if they are more likely not on margin at a brokerage but just in a bank account somewhere.

Yeah they have currency options and agricultural options (corn, soybeans, soybean oil, soybean meal) etc.

If you have an investment of 100K or more you can make some money in a day. if you dont you cant. you need to sit and wait for a big drop or a big gain. Thats in the weeks and months range not hours and minutes.

WTF? 10% a year if you are lucky.. How can you call that huge? Most pensionfunds here pay you more than that, at NO risk. Unless you can make at least 30%, you should not be in the game
