How people have changed over the decades

Example.

In the 1940s/50s Coke Cola was sold using an honor system dispenser.

There was no complicated machinery holding on to the bottle until you put your money in. Instead you just reached in and took your pop then tossed your money into a coin box.

Today most people would steal the pop...
Someone else would steal the coin box...
And then someone would steal the cooler..

People are stealing everything today.
I heard a real story about a trucker who made an emergency stop to go number two.
Since no bathroom was in plain sight he took a dump in a bag and hanged it on the truck to throw away after. For some reason, he was distracted with smth and at that point, he saw a dude just running towards his truck, grabbing the bag and running away with it.
Would've wanted to see the reaction on his face when he opened the bag to find a big stinky surprise instead of something valuable.

That's interesting. Sometimes putting up barriers makes some people want to break them. I wasn't alive in the 40's or 50's, but when my mom would take us trick or treating,Moshe used to leave a pumpkin with candy in it and a note to take 2 and not be a greedy goblin and I think most people were honorable.

A special pumpkin dispenser rigged to give only 2 candies would have seemed like an invitation to break it.

Have there been social psych tests on honor system stuff like this recently?

ahhh it´s where you live...

some people have changed, but then many haven´t.

In Cambridge, we drove past a lovely village, as passing through, a table outside a house just before reaching the many miles of fields ahead. A table with fresh fruit and veg, a pot and a sign, please tip accordingly.

We picked up 2 fresh corn on the cobs and left a quid in the pot, was the tastiest corn on the cob we´ve ever cooked and eaten

Yes, there have been many experiments. And people aren't quite as evil as we like to think they are, they just need the proper encouragement. You are not too far off.

I've seen the study in this article referenced in many books and other psychology articles: https://www.scientificamerican.com/a...better-person/

It's a matter of morale and ethics being dumped in lack of good upbringing/communities/role models and favor of "other things".

It's a broad subject...

Don't you think most parents do their best to teach their kids right from wrong?

Not too many years ago the wife and I stayed at a new(ish) hotel just north of Boston that operated an honor tuck shop in the lobby.

We were pleasantly surprised by it...picked up a few items and actually left a little more than the value of the items.

We figured if the hotel was nice enough to trust people to do the right thing...it was only right not to disappoint them.
