The coronavirus may be “reactivating” in people who have been cured of the illness, according to Korea’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

About 51 patients classed as having been cured in South Korea have tested positive again, the CDC said in a briefing on Monday. Rather than being infected again, the virus may have been reactivated in these people, given they tested positive again shortly after being released from quarantine, said Jeong Eun-kyeong, director-general of the Korean CDC.

“While we are putting more weight on reactivation as the possible cause, we are conducting a comprehensive study on this,” Jeong said. “There have been many cases when a patient during treatment will test negative one day and positive another.”

A patient is deemed fully recovered when two tests conducted with a 24-hour interval show negative results.

The Korean CDC will conduct an epidemiological probe into the cases, Jeong said.

South Korea was one of the earliest countries to see a large-scale coronavirus outbreak, but the country has seen just 200 deaths and a falling new case tally since peaking at 1,189 on Feb. 29. One of the world’s most expansive testing programs and a tech-driven approach to tracing infections has seen Korea contain its epidemic without lockdowns or shuttering businesses.

Fear of re-infection in recovered patients is also growing in China, where the virus first emerged last December, after reports that some tested positive again -- and even died from the disease -- after supposedly recovering and leaving hospital. There’s little understanding of why this happens, although some believe that the problem may lie in inconsistencies in test results.

As of Wednesday, South Korea had 10,384 virus cases, with 6,776 released from hospital, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University and Bloomberg News.

Epidemiologists around the world are in a race to find out more about the virus that causes Covid-19. The pathogen’s rapid global spread has recently seen the focus shift to patients who contract the virus but display few or atypical symptoms. Korea has been at the forefront of tracking these cases, which are causing particular concern in China, where the epidemic is showing signs of coming under control.

Every year... but with different types. E.g I had a flu at least a couple of times. My wife had no flu for all her life. As I said earlier, I think we both have coronavirus. So what does it mean? We will be immune to it.

You can call it whatever you want. We here had it for sure. Some were hospitalized with pneumonia and recovered. Many others are coughing till right now. I'm talking about the people we are communicating everyday. I don't need any confirmation because I've studied the basic things in the Soviet school. When your body has get an immunity against some virus, it will be able to do it again. Not always for your whole life but at least for some period of time.

P.S. My wife was coughing for almost a mount (no temperature and no pneumonia). So what? The immune system will do its work anyways.

Thanks.. That is a incredible article which makes a lot of sense too. Typically I'll ride the bike or go for a walk during the early morning hours when hardly anyone is out.

Another thing I do is wear 2 pairs of sweat pants / 2 sweat shirts along with the N95 mask and plastic garden gloves when I go to the grocery store.
- Pay for the groceries
- Put the groceries in my trunk
- Remove the top layer sweat pants and sweat shirt right there in the parking lot (in a plastic bag they go)
Same with the N95 mask and gloves.

-Home, I wash the fruit and wipe everything else down with Lysol disinfectant spray and wipes. / Then throw those top layer sweats in the washer with hot water.

Horrible way to live but what else can you do. Can't sit around the house wearing those potentially infected clothes.

I'll take pix of the inside of the grocery store on Wednesday when I go purchase some fruit.

Nope. Seems you are drunk right now. In the USA it's $0.49 per liter ($1.873 per gallon is average for all the states). In Russia it's $0.63 (46+ rubles) per liter. Ok, not twice right now, because ruble falls down, but still, the US gas is much cheaper. At least 33% cheaper. I believe you've studied math in the school.

And once again: Russia sells oil to the EU and China. The States buy it from Saudis etc.

So it is pretty well established now that COVID-19 disallows binding of oxygen and fills the lungs with toxic residue, thereby causing hypoxia. I don't think you are right. The virus itself does not affect the lungs. When your immune system fights it, the bacterias that live in your body got unleashed and attack your lungs. That's why the pneumonia caused by the virus is being treated by antibiotics.
