The USA and NATO had a lot to do with that. On the subject of TATU, they were more than a one hit wonder. They made a number of catchy tunes. I saw them live in London once when they played a few songs at the big HMV store in Oxford Street. Russia has made a lot of tuneful pop over the last couple of decades, but none of it ever registers in the West. For some reason that TATU song/video did - probably because it featured a pair of 16 year old fake lesbian schoolgirls in uniform, lol.

Indeed, I rememberthe time when Putin asked Bush Jr. to joint Russia into NATO. Bush said something like: you are a good guy, but the USA is not ready to manage Russia as a part of a NATO block maybe sometime in future...

I partially agree to this btw - mostly the first part - but you cannot underestimate the wish of the Baltics states, CZ, SK etc after having lived under Soviet terror for 40 years to be protected against that from ever happening again.

And if you look at Crimea, they were not wrong.
