approximated by subtracting the first foot of an acceleration run. Now a common substitute is to cut the first 3 mph from a run, cutting as much as 0.3 seconds off the time. Some publications post a 0-60 mph with rollout and others do not.

Its about a foot from the actual start. It is a drag racing deal.

Car & Driver and Road & Track have switched to measuring 5-60 times. 0-60 is almost meaningless in the real world and is more reliant on a destructive launch, which is not indicative of real-world acceleration.

That makes sense because if you do a 0-60 on public roads and a cop is around you will get pulled over for an "unsafe start" if your tires chirp but 5-60 wouldn't get you pulled over

A couple of things. I own a Tesla, and Charlie don't surf and Teslas don't "chirp". The real stat that is important is the 0-30 mph (50kmh) because that is what you need at a traffic light.
And as far as these stats go, they mean jack till you drive a Tesla. Especially in ludicrous mode. It will scare the shit out you the first time. You can smoke all your Lambos, Hellcats, Cobras etc. if you really want to.

does the car track straight under that quick acceleration? the car I drive is quick however I seldom use the power except on the freeway to avoid issues. I'm really curious about the hellcat. love to drive one... thing is from me is awd. only issue I have with doge/Chrysler cars.

No matter what you do, you cannot make it wobble. I hit it really hard in a left turn in 2 feet of snow in Whistler this year and it turned perfectly. I have the rear wheel drive model 3 but it handled better in snow way better than my AWD Grand Cherokee. The car is fucking amazing. And I have owned a couple of E Types, Corvettes etc.
However, you have to understand you are driving a computer on four wheels. So it needs to be rebooted a lot.
But you hit the freeway in Autopilot and the freeking car drives itself. All you have to do is touch the steering wheel every minute or so for proof of life. But it is fast, capable and quiet.
And it has dog mode, so I can leave my dog in a locked climate controlled car.
And, if it interests you, it has fart mode. Fun and games.

How is it finding charging stations? I have seen one in the city here in Minneapolis, its in one of the downtown hotels. Have you ever traveled distances and had issues finding charging stations?

Have you had any issues with your battery getting too hot? There was a news story on this a while ago where batteries were igniting from overheating. Reminded me of when the cell phones were doing that.

I find the electric cars fascinating, but not sure I am ready to make the switch. Even on a hybrid.

Due to the quarantine, I haven't driven that far. The range of the car is 350 miles (525 km) and I charge it in my garage. I have two electric cars. Never had a hot battery issue. Unless you are going way out of range, charging is fast and easy and plentiful.
There are a lot of Tesla superchargers and there is a whole infrastructure of electric chargers growing by the day.
If you google roadside charging, you will see it if is worth having an electric car where you live. If you charge at home, it feels kinda free. But no more Mr. Lube, Transmission, Muffler, Brakes etc. You save a shit pot in maintenance and down time.
My other car is a Fiat 500e for grocery getter and going downtown etc.
It is a good time to go electric.
BTW, as an example, you can drive from from Seattle to Los Angeles stopping 7 times to charge. Mostly twenty to thirty minute stops

ive been told a tesla compares to a bottom level BMW 6 series as far as luxury goes. not interested in anything like that at all. I'll go electric and out 4 years...when the options are better

Teslas are minimalist but comfortable. 4 years is not a bad timeline, but watch what is about to hit the market later this year. Uber luxurious pick ups that can tow large amounts and, of course, the new Hummer and Tesla pick up. VW is whispering about a VW Microbus electric revival and at the high end, Tesla roadster with be the king of the heap. The fastest and coolest car on the planet.

edit: The Tesla roadster with the rocket thruster option is 0 to 60 in 1.9 seconds.

my ride is electric, very spacious, has AC and is super cheap

bonus: it sometimes looks like a crocodile

it sucks at 0 to 60 - but I have time...

That is interesting, thank you!

One more question... you mention brakes above, the car does not have brakes? How does it stop?

I cannot believe how quiet they are, that has to be hard to get use to driving... is there any change in sound when accelerating? I think the one thing I would miss is the rumble of the muffler.... the roar of the engine... it's the teenage gear head in me

You get to dislike that engine sound after awhile. This from a guy who had a Corvette with lake pipes.

As for the brakes, it is called one foot driving. As you let off the "gas" pedal, the regenerative braking kicks in and you glide to a stop where the car just holds. Think of it like downshifting to a complete stop. If you need the brakes, they are still there, but you hardly ever use them. So they last forever.

here is the secret place to do stuff like that: freeway on ramps, on the feeder freeways in semi rural areas. I would take the on ramp at Osborne and the 118 going west. cars on the freeway can't see what you're doing....

I was driving a V with 6.2 and a blower... fuck! what a hoot that was... anyway I would hold the peddle to the floor and the car would chirp going into EVERY gear... and by the time you get on the freeway, slow down a touch and merge right in...I've merged on the freeway like this right by cops...

yeah my car keeps a safe follow distance with a stop if I persist. mostly I drive around on torque. don't want to accelerate any faster than I do now.... my first v with the 6.2 and blower would immediately start to slow if I took my foot off the pedal. that was blower dragging the engine down.

I'm tone deaf and the hum of a car means I need to be lip reading to understand anyone talking, which is kinda hard.

So it was amazing for me to be in an electric for the first time.. because I could hear. Its a selling point I don't think they push enough.

I have a 3 because it fits in my garage, but the S is pretty spectacular. It is like driving an insanely fast formula car with all the comforts of a living room. The car I want, however, is the electric E Type they drove at the Royal wedding. Retro fitted hot cars could be amazing.

Dog mode would be great

Dog mode makes it worth the price of the car because I take my dog everywhere. Beats fart mode hands down.

That is actually pretty cool! Thanks again
