We used to use banger caps from one of the local train depots and toss them in the street for cars to drive over, they're loud as all fuck.

Also, packing as much black powder out of fireworks into aluminum tubing, nailed to the gound with a D size battery jammed in the top, then lighting a windproof match to shoot the battery as far as we could.
