DVD Sales?

What's happening in adult DVD sales?

Sites like adultempire, cduniverse (adult), LuckyStarDVD, excaliburfilms, BushDVD, etc?
Also adultdvdmarketplace and jeedoo?

Recently, adultempire began to offer used DVDs along with their new ones.

There should be plenty of used and functional DVDs ready to be restored to the marketplace.

Although streaming is the main thing, physical is making a comeback.

All those small-screen users can enjoy lower resolutions.

Thanks.

i dont know about porn dvds, since the internet is accessible on any device, but i've started growing our home dvd collection again. popping a movie into the Blu-ray player and chilling on the couch is more immersive than picking a video on Netflix. usually better sound and video too.

Thanks, NatalieK. That is great to hear.

Around 2005, when some adult sites began to offer HD videos, and when some DVD covers would say "Filmed in HD," I thought that DVD popularity would decline. Then a few years later along came Blu-Ray, which was sure to end the use of DVDs! Also, we still have an old-school adult DVD store in the area, with those viewing booths (spewing booths?) downstairs.

One thing I like about DVDs over streaming is that you can edit the VOB files on a DVD for personal use. When I buy porn, I like to keep it too!

The adult DVD site jeedoo keeps a tab on the number of DVDs it has in stock, and I think that has gone up in the past year or so, from about 160,000 (est) to 171,000. Thanks again.

Thanks, plsureking. The word "immersive" is perfect! Also, a number of discount stores, at least in our area, have shelves and shelves of donated DVDs.

It is fun to go on a treasure hunt and not know what the treasure is until you see it!

DVD - with a Booklet

The 35th anniversary Deluxe Edition of Easy Rider (1969) on DVD includes an 80-page booklet about the film. By definition, NetFlix would not have that to offer us. As plsureking has said, definitely a more immersive experience. Myself, I have never used a pay streaming service, so I cannot comment on a comparison of video quality to the original releases.

But the consensus is that many streams are a bit polluted, or intermittent, or even run dry!

The quality and uninterrupted enjoyment (no buffer issues,) plus "art" factor (from the box cover) definitely give a hand to the physical route. I like buying physical videogames for that reason, plus you can sell them on eBay if you discover you don't like them.

DVD Sales and Durability

Anyone have "really old" DVDs, adult or otherwise, that still work fine?
Like say after 20 years or so?
A few of my 20+ year old adult DVDs are inconsistent or do not play.
Maybe 5% of them. A different drive sometimes helps.
They look clean on the playing surface.
A potential buyer might be hesitant to purchase an older DVD.
Thanks.

DVD sales are very much dependent on where you sell them.

According to our numbers, North America is perhaps the worst market for DVD sales because everyone is caught up in the Internet. On the other hand, many European nations and Japan still buy a decent number of DVDs.

Domestically we'll still sell apx. 600 units per title. Internationally, we'll grab 2K to 5k sales.

Thanks for some raw numbers, notinmybackyard. I wondered what was considered a fairly profitable number of units sold per title. I had heard about 3000.

I am from the Great White North and it is really hard to find older, less-common adult DVDs that ship to my country. I pay a US buyer $18 commission per DVD plus all other expenses to get something uncommon across the border. It is like a third-world country to get older adult DVDs here, although there are still a few adult video stores. Would you believe adultdvdmarketplace charges $40 shipping for the first DVD from a given seller at its international site? It is about $6 at its US site. And the US site has a far greater selection. Of course these purchases are a luxury, unlike eggs, although some might think otherwise!

Thanks.

I started in the business around 2005, so for me, we edited our movies in 720 & only went to full HD a few years later. The dvds always sold & even now, we´re about to release another few dvds this year.

Still now, I always enjoy going into an adult shop and having a look around, the DVD´s definitely sell, I think for the reason you say, it´s actually purchase & keep a real tangible item of film

Maybe streaming is like a movie star waving to you, whereas a DVD is like getting their autograph.

Do you think PAL at 576 and NTSC at 480 plays a role in sales?

I have collected older DVDs in mainly NTSC and never thought about the perhaps higher quality of a PAL version. A lot of older adult videos were filmed with miniDV tapes that maxed out at 480. But if filmed at 576, DVD lovers may have missed out on some higher quality DVD versions of their favorite scenes! Maybe I should have looked for Euro versions of US studio DVDs!

I wonder how many older DVD titles had two different qualities available.

just frustrating the dvds with the mention Filmed in HD most films are still not found in HD in 2023 like Tennervision studio.
for old films I prefer Vob for to do deinterlace via Qtgmc and upscal via Topaze, never I buy shitty copies encode with my feet.

Cool.
I remember one time on my birthday, the only email celebrating it was from a porn site I had purchased from! I live alone with a purposely minimal social circle, in order to maintain some freedom.

The one thing I don't like is when a hungry OF model says it is her "birthday month."

Thanks, Eva75.
I guess you know that even if the DVD cover says Filmed in HD, the DVD data itself cannot be greater than 576 if in PAL format or 480 in NTSC format, as opposed to HD at 720 or Full HD at 1080. I bought a couple of DVDs that said Filmed in HD, and had hoped that they would magically be 720 because of some change to the DVD technology! Kind of a sneaky way for a company to get more sales!

Here is a story of how I was able to get an HD version filmed back in 2005.

I like the model Sophie Strauss, and she was in a DVD called Bellezza Video Vol 1, filmed in HD (720) in 2005. Although I had purchased the DVD (480), I also wanted to get the HD version. So about a year ago I did some online research on Bellezza. I then subscribed to Amber Chase's OF account. Amber owns the rights to Bellezza Videos, and after I asked her about it, she said she had a digital copy of the original HD version! So I offered her $75 for my own copy.

It is fun to acquire something you thought was extinct, or impossible to find.

I looked up your Tennervision at LuckyStarDVD and found that all 6 DVDs were sold out, and all were from the reference year 2005! I am not allowed to send a link as I do not have enough posts here for that permission.

There is one great secret that is sometimes used by a studio to give us HD on a DVD. They put the HD scene(s) on a DVD-R, instead of on a standard DVD-Video disc. I did once acquire a DVD title that included the 480 disc and also a DVD-R disc that had an HD (720) wmv file of one of the scenes on it. That was kind of impressive!

You can even put a 4K video on a blank DVD-R and watch it on your computer. But of course it won't play on a DVD player. As I understand it, the DVD-R approach is not the same approach used for the obsolete format called HD DVD.

A dual-layer DVD can hold about 8.5 GB of data. But for smooth 4K playback, it might be best to transfer the data to a hard drive first. A DVD can hold about 9.8 Mbps of video data, if we allow for the audio data too, although it is common for a DVD to be encoded at about half that bit rate.

I think it would be cool for a studio to release a 4K scene as a one-scene DVD-R.

Maybe add in a BTS interview of the model(s) and get personal again.
It could function as a ready-made archival DVD for collectors, too.

Thanks.

film in HD well on the DVD it will be in 720×480 so there is indeed a copy of the Film in HD which could have been released in BR if the studio wanted it or proposed on Aebn etc

Yes. I think Blu-Ray technology came out a couple of years later.
Blu-Ray porn was hot for a few years and then really plummeted.
Not sure about all those factors. Need to do research!
I love crystal-clear video, but sometimes you see imperfections, too!

One thing I didn't mention in that already-lengthy post was that the Bellezza studio also had a website that offered the videos in HD, but I did not know it at the time, and when I discovered its existence through the wayback machine about a year ago, the site was by then defunct. So I simply hoped that Amber Chase had kept the videos somewhere. Thanks.

If you plan on selling DVD's, then I would suggest you also consider putting your films onto a usb stick as many people do not use a dvd player these days.

We do that but with an entire package which includes a booklet and panties. The only problem with sticks is that you need find a way to protect the video file from (most) piracy.
