MS ended win 10 support on OCT 14'th.

Win 11 is not officially supported for older CPU's. You have to manually install it but even than MS may halt security updates to you at any time..

I've still been getting auto updates, but I haven't seen a new in a little while.

I used to always update my entire pc every 5 years but when I got the i5 6600k.. it was still going strong after 5 years.. so I didn't bother updating... it still does everything I need really. It's definitely time to upgrade soon though..

If you are forever working like I am, you deserve to upgrade your setup every few years. Besides being able to take advantage of the latest operating systems which also have the latest security updates etc, you enjoy more speed, more flexibility, etc.

My current work machine is an M4 Mac Mini with 24GB of Ram. I chose this one because I love Apple products, but also because I can run OS/X and Linux and Windows 11 all at the same time, in the same or different windows or screens. It lets me work really efficiently.

I don't have an answer for you but.... I upgrade every few years.

I just bought a new Microsoft Surface Pro and I use it for everything - tablet, laptop, and PC when hooked up to a docking station and monitor.

For my main PC I use a refurbished Alienware. I buy an used Alienware PC, strip it down, new hard drives, new CPU.....

We have i7 powered machines in my office, and although we moved to using macbooks a year ago we still use the old win-PCs here and there and it is pretty annoying that it won't let upgrade to win11. 32GB RAM, i7, 1060 graphics cards.. I think the i7 is the "weak point" but it is actually absolutely ridiculous that those are "not good enough".
I think I won't buy a new, modern CPU just to get win11... Or should I?

the most recent i7 is from 2023. the oldest are from 2008.

Your CPU is supported if it is:

Intel 8th gen or newer (Core i3/i5/i7/i9-8xxx, 9xxx, 10xxx, 11xxx…)

AMD Ryzen 2000 or newer (2600, 3600, 5600, 7600, etc.)

Your CPU is not supported if it is:

Intel 7th gen or older

AMD Ryzen 1000 series (1200, 1600, 1700, etc.)

Either way , don't ever buy intel anymore. AMD has destroyed them in CPU's. only get Ryzen

we´re not on 11, still having updates for the next year on 10...

It´s fast enough to have 11 upgrade, however, the CPU is a 2020 I7 6500U, running smooth at about 3ghz, with 16gb of ram, is too old to run 11 unless wanting to self update & this doesn´t sound worth the hassel.

So we´re waiting to until next year, maybe mid 2026 for a new system, although hearing how shit 11 is, rather stay on 10
