Got hit by w32/Pate.b virus!

I must admit, I've been "Blessed" in that a major virus has never given my puter any problems. But late this morning...WHAM, I had like 1500 infected files. Sigh.

I'm using McAffee to try & get rid of it, but it's a MOFU! It HIDES, usually in a .tmp file, and unless I want to re-install windows (which I don't), I'm not sure what I'm going to do.

Anyone have any experience dealing with this virus that could recommend something other than McAfee to get rid of it?

Thanks!

Norton should be able to fix this.

I can't seem to if the one you are referring to: http://sarc.com/avcenter/venc/auto/index/indexW.html

Are you sure it is called that? To make sure you should try sarc's online scanner: http://security.symantec.com/ssc/hom...JUIYCZRWEJGSSK and hit Scan for Viruses

Yeah, it definitely is the w32/Pate.b virus. It's #3 on McAfee's top 10 current worst virii active. What I did, was delete the windows/temp subdirectory..it hides in .tmp files there.

Then I un-installed the infected files I could no get cleaned by McAfee's virus scan and re-installed.

GOOD NEWS..just did a complete scan and NO SIGN of it!
I think what was throwing me off before was that it hid in the windows/temp directory and kept re-infecting after I cleaned everything.
