Microsoft wants to make google the next netscape..

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&c...google&spell=1

If you look at the http://search.msn.com/ it looks like a google xp version. I also heard they are going to be implementing much more of the msn search in the new windows.. (ex. IE, outlook, word)

Bottom line - if Microsoft can provide more relevant links higher up the list, they'll get more people searching.

However, I really don't think that the "search engine war" is nearly as important as the browser battle.

Yes it is, look at the second paragraph of that article.

"...listed Google and open source as top competitors for Microsoft"

Have you seen Google's stock prices lately? The search engine war is far, far more lucrative than the free web browser.

MSN Search is way behind now, but IE was way behind Netscape and look what happened ...

That's weird, all my list of keywords I've typed into Google are showing on search.msn.com !

If you look at the source code msn has the same input name as google (q). So whatever you search in google will come in the history of MSN and vice versa.

Google:

MSN:

MSN has it's own spiders and indexing now right? They were supposed to turn entirely independent of google this year. And yes, I too heard about the search engine implementation with next year's release of the new Windows OS. I wonder how much this will hurt Google.

This doesn't really mean anything, MANY search engines use q as the input variable as well..

I'm not really talking about proffit or immediate financial gain for either company, I'm talking about importance.

IE has dominance on the desktop. Microsoft gets a lot of advertising and dictates a lot of standards on the web because of this dominance. While goggle has done very well to market itself and has been a pioneer on the web, it won't be as important to Microsoft to have the majority of searches completed through MSN as it is for the majority of users to view the entire web though IE.

So, I think that the importance of the browser war was much more significant then MSN vs. Google.

It makes sence for MS to be worried about google.

> Google is comming out with its own browser soon.
> Google Supports open source.
> Google is the # 1 search engin.

when i type what i was looking for into the msn search, i got actual results, when i type it in google, i get 50% of the msn ones plus 50% garbage spam results.

It makes sence for MS to be worried about everyone. They're the biggest computer software developer. When you're the biggest at anything, you always have people trying to overthrow you.

I think that MS is trying to learn from google and improve on what they've done. Will they be successufull? I sure hope not. However, I'm glad that they're trying. It will likely make for better search engines on the net and give WiredGuy something to do with his free time

No one in the begining ever thought anything could overthrow netscape, but MS did. They could do the same to google.

I can't figure MSN out. I've got some top 10 listings that kick ass.. and then for other domains it won't even pick them up. Just weird.

I can remember telling people that netscape had 90% of the browser market, AND the much better technology, AND the momentum, AND the support of the hardcore users, etc, etc...

microsoft fights too many battles in my opinion. I dont see them taking down Google anytime soon...

Google reports earnings this Thursday and that should answer alot of your questions about whats what! please advise

extended: actually MS entering into the search engine game is GOOD for us! That means more searchs and if there halfway successful more money for our sites! Kudos MS :D Kudos....

netscape made the mistake of putting themselves in microsoft sites by trying to represent themselves as a development platform (build for the browser campaign) which ment the directly targeted microsofts dominate platform and at the same time giving microsoft the excuse to intergrate the technology into the os.

Google has been a little smarter by keeping the technology outside the platform development area. They did make the make the mistake of announcing desktop searching using the google indexing methodogy which give microsoft the right to improve their internal file searching by intergrating the search technology from msn (and vis versa)

I really hope that google does go crying to the DOJ and fights this fight in the marketplace where it belongs.
