Over the years Homegrown Video has been a critical launching pad and/or a booster rocket for porn careers. From starlets like Stephanie Swift and Anna Malle to producers like Mike South, Sweet Entertainment Group, and Dave Cummings. My brother hired the Sweets to shoot the series he concieved and named "Sweetloads". Dave Cummings was selling a few copies of his videos when we took him on. We revamped his boxcovers, and renamed his series "The Sugardaddy" and became the first company to distribute the old guy young woman niche.

Usually we are quite content to watch our little fledglings grow wings of their own and leave the nest. Sure, it hurts sometimes to hear afterwards - "Homegrown, nice guys, but they pay like shit", but what can we say? You don't see us denying it. The part that hurts, and which we often don't get the respect for doing is all the press and hype that goes into launching a new name in the biz. We sometimes have to demean and debase ourselves before members of the press who have heard it all and seen it all before.

And trust me, selling a niche like Sugardaddy is not easy when the writers don't have any interest in it personally. Sure, they have all day to talk to up and coming cute starlets that will suck their cock for an interview but what are you going to do with someone like Dave Cummings or Mike South who, let's give them a big hand, don't suck dick for press.

You have to be a squeaky wheel. You have to beg, plead, cajole, bitch, and moan and set your publicist on them and what do you get? A frustrated editor that finally has to give in and run your bit. So that is what AVN editor Mark Kulkis must have been reacting to when we asked for some press on our anniversary and hitting the milestone of 500 titles.

Sure, he would give us some play. We stopped whining and left his office. Only one month later the AVN came out and our headline, if you can even call it that since it was fairly buried and only sat atop a few lines of text, said "Big Fucking Deal, Homegrown hits 500". That stung, but then he had the nerve to make fun of our names too - crediting us as "the guys with the Dr. Suess sounding names".

That meant war.

We had just launched Mike South's Southern Belles. We even won an AVN award with the series. Mike was getting good press. And that is why we should have never taken him to the Vegas show. As soon as he showed up he had an offer from a cat named Patick Collins to take the series over to Elegant Angel. Mike came up to us to see if we would counter. "I don't know guys, that is an awful lot of money" he told us. We said "go in piece", meaning we would keep our piece and he could go break off his own piece wherever.

At around that same time Kulkis left AVN to pursue production and he was working with Elegant as well.

We had to act fast. We went and got the supplies. Set the trap. Mike and Mark were sitting together in the Elegant booth when the hot breakfast in a styrofoam box showed up.

Mark seemed reluctant to open it. Mike finally opened it for him. That is when they both saw how Homegrown deals its own form of justice. Inside was a pile of green scrambled eggs and a big green slice of ham. Inside the top of the box read the inscription: "I do not like them here or there I do not like them anywhere".

Later on we went up to Mark to make amends. Moff and I stood on either side of Kulkis and smiled as a photog from Hustler snapped us all shaking hands and forgiving and forgetting. Only we were tight with Hustler, and they did us the immense favor of adding "I'm with stupid" and "he is gay" with arrows pointing right at Kulkis onto the black sweat shirts we happened to be wearing.

The love-hate relationship with AVN did not start with the internet companies. This goes back to the beginning of its history. Everyone loves when they are getting good press and reviews but everyone hates when they feel AVN is not catering to their special needs. However, not many ever actually get ridiculed for their names so leave it to team Homegrown to seek revenge for the "Dr. Suess" crack.

During a big AVN fundraiser fan friendly event at The Roxy in Los Angeles we crashed through the side doors of the club with a gigantic dragon float carried by a dozen people for each of its three sections, blasting smoke and shooting sparkle blasts from its mouth, then a float of rolling waves, and finally followed with another float that was a giant oyster. A military fogger blasted forth and filled the room with a thick cloud that flashed with the dragon's laser light eyes and various strobes to make the Roxy seem like a magical box containing a storm of thunder and lightning. We had a drum and horn procession jamming jungle jazz musical mayhem around the dragon while Slash's band was hitting the stage but we had already made arrangements with them to give us a fanfaire appropriate to the moment as well. Luckily, the club manager said he was fine with everything as long as we didn't set anything on fire...

We dropped the oyster on the stage whereupon it opened up to release a bunch of pearlescent balloons and a burlesque fan dancer who shook and shimmied while we terrorized the audience for about 15 minutes then flew back out leaving a crowd of shell shocked mooks.

Revenge is not only sweet. It is also entertaining.

Best part about that night was the "Spinal Tap" moment when the giant oyster wouldn't open up on cue to let the exotic dancer out.

The band was repeating their riffs, then started looking around at each other wondering if they should play on or jump in to pry open the oyster.

After about 5 tense minutes and some prying by the stage hand it opened and the dancer popped out- a little out of breath and wobbly but alive nonetheless.

I have only huge respect for him and what he has accomplished in the industry but also for how humble and down to earth he has remained as a person. Moral to the story: What you shoot with is never as important as what ends up on the tape.

John is committed to his craft and continues to stick to that vision to empower directors to produce their own great content. This model is why Evil Angel is who they our today and I am happy to be with such a great company.

When I was first starting out in the business Farrell and his brother Moffit were some of the first people I met. Back then I was shooting Amateur porn out of my house in San Diego and running amateur porn websites. I think I also remember doing some graphic work for homegrown but I suck at graphics so we won't go there ;) Anyway, I will aways respect the homegrown family for the help they provided us back then and the great times we had.

We all laughed but a year or so later Rob was winning awards and a darling of the adult press worldwide... a couple of years after that he was under indictment but that is another story.

We sold well with Max but his product was just not the right fit. Still friends with Max even though I think it is a bit bizarre that he doesn't want anyone to call him Paul anymore.

I remember we always used to talk about how we would take our evolving skills one day into the mainstream. When I was working on "Orgazmo" Max came down to shoot his cameo. We sat and talked while the lights were being set. Max praised my good fortune. Then, with a bit of melancholy he lamented how by listening to the increasingly bizarre requests of certain vocal fans he had basically gone out on a limb and there was no turning back.

I don't know for sure but I always think that was the day he decided that he would be Max from then on, leaving paul out on a curb by a warehouse on a street somewhere in LA.

Far-L, I credit YOU with getting me a cameo in "Orgazmo"--what a fun day that was!!
