California residents. Don't forget: New laws today.

A law signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger last year will be strictly enforced to all drivers in California, starting July 1st, here are the details with the violation fines.

* Carpool lane ? 1st time $1068.50 starting 7/1/08 (The $271 posted on the highway is out-dated)
Don?t do it again because 2nd time is going to be double. 3rd time, triple, and 4th time license suspended.
* Incorrect lane change ? $380. Don?t cross the lane on solid lines or at intersections.
* Block intersection ? $485
* Driving on the shoulder ? $450
* Cell phone use in the construction zone. ? Double fine (2 times $285) as of 07/01/08.
* All Cell phones must be ?hands free? while driving Fine is $285.
* Passengers over 18 not in their seatbelts ?- both passengers and
drivers get tickets
* Speeders ? allowance only drive 3 miles above the limit.

* DUI (Driving Under Influence of drug or alcohol) = JAIL (Stays on your driving record for 10 years!)
* teens to put down all cell phones and other electronic devices while driving. The new law prohibits drivers under age 18 from using any cell phone or other ?mobile-service device? while driving, even if it is equipped with a hands-free device.
The term ?mobile-service device? includes, but isn?t limited to, a broadband personal-communication device, specialized mobile radio device, handheld device or laptop computer with mobile-data access, pager, and two-way messaging device. Teen drivers ticketed for a violation will be subject to a fine of at least $70 (base fine plus penalties) for a first offense and at least $175 (base fine plus penalties) for subsequent offenses. Unlike the ban on handheld cell phones, a law enforcement officer may cite a teen for a suspected violation of this law only in connection with another suspected driving offense.

The cellphone use law does not carry that big of a fine....

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/cellularphonelaws/index.htm

Q: What are the fines(s) if I?m convicted?
A: The base fine for the FIRST offense is $20 and $50 for subsequent convictions. With the addition of penalty assessments, the fines can be more than triple the base fine amount.

I am mixed on the hands free deal, primarily because I have two cell phones (different carriers), so now I need to get my car blue toothed, and I need to upgrade my backup phone. However, careless drivers make me glad it is there.

My concern is the new three mile an hour over the limit issue. I do not know how to drive the speed limit. Only way I can maintain that speed is with cruise control.

A couple weeks ago I got pulled over on I-5. The cop told me I was slowest person he had pulled over all day . . . only doing 90. He let me go. I wonder what would happen if it happened today.

I believe it is just that texting was not specified in the law, however, if the cops thinks you were distracted you can still be cited.

I thought that seemed higher than I thought. Thanks for the link: http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors...ia-tickets.htm

After reading that I seemed to recall seeing this same thing last year. The only one I new for sure was the hands free law. The others were a surprise to me.

Yeah, but your friend is operating in the sticks. Does he make house calls? I will have to find one that is closer than 40 miles away. I am sure biz has been popping for him.

Yeah, I heard that laws are made on a revshare basis. The senator or rep that introduces a new law that generates income gets 10% of the profits generated by their law.

You got pulled over on the 5? When I first moved out here my friend told me cops never pull anyone over for speeding. So far thats been true for me but I did get a ticket for flicking a cig in front of a cop. Hey. I'm from MD...it rains there!

it IS NOT illegal to text and drive. they had a chp officer that was on a popular radio show here in l.a. on monday and he was blown away that they cannot enforce someone texting. he flat out said they are instructed to pull people over for the phone to their ear. the show host asked him about texting and he said flat out it is NOT illegal to text and you can have your phone in your hand pressing all the buttons you want as long as it is not to your ear. to me that kinda defeats hands free, but the officer said its true. this law does not protect anyone. the most dangerous thing is texting yet you wont get a citation for it. sucks actually. some dumb bitch nearly smacked me yesterday on the 118 while trying to text and drive. stupid broad.

damn, the carpool fine is crazy. i used to do it sometimes when I was coming back from Simi Valley on the 405... i had my windows tinted pretty dark so it was hard to see in to see if there was another passenger.

i think a lot of states are adopting new fines. there was something on the news in PA the other day that they are doing a 30 day "fine-a-thon" on the highways here and anything over 3 MPH the speed limit is a guaranteed ticket for over $200.

my friend is a state cop in PA and he said that they have to give you a 10MPH buffer when doing the timing lines (two white lines on the road) but they get people to admit their speed. if your going less than 10mph over and get stopped in a timing zone, say you were doing the speed limit or 1 mph under

Pretty common sense stuff, dont you think?

Driving = point A to point B safely.

Driving != hollering into a device while eating a meal, watching tv and changing lanes recklessly, hehe. Although I cant prove that!

The "shoulder" is the edge of the roadbed on which the road is paved. Usually gravel or dirt or grass. The place where people pull over if they have to change a tire etc.

They're about to bring back the tolls on the bridge in Montreal... Also increased parking meters almost double.

He is quite wrong. I have spent a couple grand for speeding tickets on the 5. "Technically" had my license suspended, although I worked the system pretty well on that one.

I got a radar detector that I now use on all road trips. It has saved me a ton.

I think they should outlaw texting... not while driving, just completely. Drives me fucking nuts and is a waste of time.

Q: Does the new ?hands-free? law allow drivers 18 and over to text message while driving?

A: The law does not specifically prohibit that, but an officer can pull over and issue a citation to a driver of any age if, in the officer?s opinion, the driver was distracted and not operating the vehicle safely. Sending text messages while driving is unsafe at any speed and is strongly discouraged.

The problem is, as an officer, how do you differentiate between someone scrolling through the contacts, dialing a number or texting? This is why they can not ticket you for texting because they can not prove that is what you were doing when they pulled you over.

if you become a hazard to the road you can be pulled over for any number of distractions. but legally having the phone in your hand and texting is not illegal. personally i think its 10 times more dangerous to text than talk.
