The Heartland is always ULTRA CONSERVATIVE...

Both coasts and lake shores are more open minded and believe in a real Democracy.

Anyone have any theory?

It is based on level of education. Dumber states vote Republican.

Economy, Religion, Education.

Though I would not say conservatives, I would say right wing republicans. Very little wrong with real conservatives as a whole.

Look at the US welfare map and it shows the biggest numbers in the blue states that have large cities except for the NE. All the counties outside the welfare zones are red in the blue states.

Also look at the foreclosure map of the US and you'll also see it mirrors the welfare map and is mostly in the cities in the blue states.

Areas around bodies of water and major trade routes in this country are usually always "blue". Maybe its multiculturalism, maybe its education levels in and around cities, who knows. I'm sure there are lots of studies and articles about it, but I'm too lazy/drunk to look for them.

There's probably a level of xenophobia (at least based on what I've seen around the country) in more rural areas which is why "they" pepper language about Obama as being an outsider, and "not like us".

That's where people live. Of course they have the highest foreclosure rates. But remember, most blue states can support themselves, most red states can't. 84% of red states are welfare states.

Good call, I should have also mentioned both higher populations and more concentrated populations.

I think it simply has to do with population allocation. Even when you look at the county maps ( here is a good one http://www-personal.umich.edu/~mejn/election/) even the most conservative states have blue areas in them. Those blue areas are where the big cities are. If you choose to live in or around a major city you have to be a little more open minded and open to other people, lifestyles, cultures, religions and things of that nature. Most people with that type of personality disposition are more liberal by nature and hence they tend to vote democrat. Those that live out in the rural areas tend to be less of many of those things. I grew up in a pretty small town and most of the people that lived in that small town were like minded. If you went there and tried to talk about gay marriage you would get your ass kicked. So smaller towns tend to be more conservative and "redneck" (and I don't mean that in a bad way) so they tend to vote republican.

Here is the interesting thing. Many republicans (and I would guess the same could be send for many democrats as well) simply vote based on a few issues. I read a story in the Wall Street Journal yesterday about the election in Ohio. They talked to several republican voters and all of them said the same thing. They agreed that they thought McCain was not equipped to fix the economy and they didn't think Palin was ready to be VP or Pres if something happened to McCain and some of them even thought Obama might actually be a better president, but they said they couldn't allow themselves, as Christians, to vote for someone, who was pro-choice so they were voting for McCain.

You can't argue with or reason with that type of logic.

Nah. The poster above you is more correct.

The next town over from me, Cereal City (Battle Creek), has a large majority who not only vote republican, but listen to all those psychotic hatemonger shows like Rush, Hannity, and talk radio.

The best way to sum up the town is.. bad schools, the klan (which is funny considering the town's mix), blue collar, less that 35k a year, union, religious...

Take religion out of the mix and ...voting for republicans is pretty much against anything logical that would benefit them.

Ever seen those red state voters?

They love their guns. They love hunting. They're fanatic Christians. And they all have red necks.
