Keyword strategy

Basically you have 3 types of blogs, traffic blogs, sales blogs and feeder blogs. Traffic blogs do not do well at sales, sales blogs do not do well at traffic and feeder blogs are really geared at filtering.

This project is going to focus on traffic blogs and how to deal with the deficiency of making sales. One of the more obvious ways of doing that filter your traffic to your sales blog but I'm going to present something a little different as a sales tool from your traffic blog. But we'll get into that a little later, for now lets delve into keyword strategies.

Understanding keyword strategies begin with thinking about how people search. For any given topic, there are thousands of different ways people will select the keyword or phrase. The more different keywords and phrases you rank for, the more traffic will come your way.

The best part of this is that increasing the number of keywords actually helps you target your traffic. Think about it, ranking for "porn", even if you do ever achieve it, attracts a general audience usually just surfing. But a #1 ranking for "blonde pornstar blowjobs" is both easier to obtain and the traffic you get will be filtered and looking for exactly what your providing.

Once you've selected your niche, in this case amateur, the next step is to develop your keywords. Your keywords should be used for everything you develop when it comes to your blog, the domain name, categories, link anchor text, tags (both meta and blog related), and to be used in your posts. Therefore, there is no such thing as too many keywords and I recommend that you always keep your eyes out for additional keywords / phrases.

Step 1 Brainstorm

What I do for this part is I write down every single term or phrase I can think of that describes the niche I selected. I then will enter what I think are the popular terms into google and follow some of the top links searching those sites for additional keywords that I may have not thought about. I'll also take the sponsors tours and note what keyword / phrases they use. I keep those in a separate area or note which sponsors focus on the words I've already selected. This way I can use some of the same keyword phrases when making a post that the sponsor uses.

Don't forget to add the singular or plural of a term to your list. Popular misspellings are great for SE traffic as well so don't hesitate to put them on your list.

For brainstorming I like to use Google Adword Tool but it doesn't work for the adult terms. Try it if your doing something softcore but if your site is hardcore it's a waste of time

Step 2 Core Terms

While brainstorming you shouldn't have given much thought to how relevant things were. Now we are going to concentrate on relevance. Relevance for search terms refers to the likelihood that your blog will be of interest to the searcher. To help determine this I use Trellians Keyword Discovery or Wordtracker. Both have free trial versions but if you can pay for the subscription service if you can.

For each of the candidate search terms in your brainstorming lists use the database to examine the top 10-15 variations. If at least three of the top results work with your term, then you can consider this a core term. Make a list of core terms and their variations along with the search count.

You should now have everything you need to start setting up your blog. You'll use the core terms and their variations. I'll use core terms for my meta tags and post titles. Variations to for category and blog tags. Your post should contain both core terms and a variation but we'll get into that later.

I chose "drunk chicks" as my niche and in keeping with a theme I'm developing registered nastydrunkchicks.com. Out of my core terms and variations, plus a little imagination for categories I'll use "what drunk chicks do".

So, I guess it's time now to start developing your keywords. Next will be setting up your blog including setting up your theme and plug-ins for WP geared to optimizing your theme.
