:2cents Motley Crue

I was watching their, "Behind the Music", episode this morning. Um.. wow.

So these dudes talk about themselves like they are Def Leppard, or Zeppelin.

Yes, but still one of the most requested behind the music. ( before youtube era).

They do think of themselves as monsters of Rock and maybe they were in the 80s. They certainly partied just as much as Zeppelin did, but please, leave Def Leppard outside the comparision. They had huge success but were never known to be party animals. They were the "nice guys" of "metal" (read hard rock).

Wehther you like Motley or not, make sure to read The Dirt, their auto-biography. Every page is juicy and you'll see there's nothing they haven't done.

Your mean their "public perception" eh toots?

Maybe you should catch THEIR (D.L.'s) "Behind the Music", and do some additional reading. Starting with Steve Clark dying from alcohol and drugs.

good precision... got any book you recommend?

I know they also had one unique and interesting story. Regardless of their music, this band has been through so much. Huge success with first album, becoming national heroes, drummer loses arm in car accident, huuuuge comeback with an album with 6 #1 singles ( almost a greatest hits in itself), death of Steve ( but I think it was more a personnal addiction than a band thing... at least, from what I know...) then another strange death in the original lineup...

Honestly, I would love to read more on them. But I still don't think they fall on the same party categorie as Aerosmith, Led Zep, Motley, Sabbath...

They engaged in a level of debauchery the likes of which Keith Richards would be (and probably is) proud of. While they might not have sold as many records as Zeppelin or Def, they CERTAINLY have the cred to talk about themselves as musical gods of their time.

Besides, can you think of any high profile group in the last 50 years whose chemical and sexual accolades upstaged the Crue? I can literally think of no one else but the Rolling Stones, and even they fall a close second, imho.

I will always remember being 14 and screaming along to "Shout At The Devil." That does not change the fact that Motley Crue was one of the worst bands to ever get a major recording contract. Truly awful stuff. Anyone with a few months of guitar lessons under their belt could play better then Mick Mars or Nikki Sixx. To see their names or Motley Crue even mentioned in the same paragraph as Led Zeppelin is a crime against G-d.

I've read The Dirt and It's a great book Motley was pretty big during the GGG and Dr Feelgood era, can't compare to the biggest though.

I am gonna start my own band and top them!

On another note, I kind of enjoy when these books are mainly about music / background / facts, of course debauchery is an essential part of rock, but it can't be turned into some tabloid reading for those, who never went on a real rampage.

That's why I haven't read the Richard Cole's "stairway to heaven" and rather read the "Hammer of the gods" for example, I know Cole has been in some deep shit, so he had to write something that had to GUARANTEE to make a buck.
