Hosting companies inside! - whats the best pricing you can do on 100mbps + server.

What is the best you can do on the following server setup......with no contracts & no setup fee's.

1) 2 dual core cpu's, or 1 quadcore
2) 8 gig of ram
3) 1 terrabyte of storage
4) 100mbps (non-cogent b/w)
5) Fully managed [or at least semi-managed] with free reboot service.
6) You have at least 1 level 3 tech on staff at all times.

So lets go ahead & post your best "public" price. Do not post "contact us for a quote". This is a public pricing thread only!

I really don't think you guys are going to have many people "jumping" at the opportunity to post prices for your deal. Don't get me wrong, what you want is totally doable... but there are a lot of repercussions to posting private prices on large deals. I would think that you guys would understand that.

"Special deals" are special for a reason. They are private.

weird - what's the problem with giving a price quote on a server configuration and bandwidth commitment? what's so complicated? nobody's asking to give some ridiculous loss leader pricing - give your best price that you are willing to publically quote.

It's pretty simple to understand why a quality host wouldnt want tp post in public their 100 meg price. What if they have several other people with the same 100 meg deal but that pay more? why would they want to have to now drop all their prices? If thats the way the industry went then hosts would all go bankrupt. Jeesh is that to hard to understand?

Yea, but if i had big commitment with someone, and they now offered way better deal, without offering to move me to that, i'd be out of there very fast.

In any case, i know that choopa and pacificrack and few others used to quote quite abit public deals. They must have not seen the thread yet.

after spending most of today dealing with hosting providers (I decided on Phatservers) I suggest you do it the other way around.... create a thread asking people to post the deals they are getting with their various hosting providers.

I think alot of money is made in the hosting business because customers dont talk with each other about the pricing plan they are on. If you got a server in Jan 2007 and are still paying the same monthly price in Jan 2009 for the same specs then you are no longer getting the best deal. this is sometimes referred to as being on "oldschool pricing". One discussion with your salesperson usually gets you a better deal.

For example, I noticed one of my providers who I was with for years was quietly dinging me overage charges for a few months without me realizing it -- once I noticed I was annoyed nobody contacted me to offer an upgrade - I spoke to the salesperson and I ended up with almost double my transfer amount for the same price. Its one of those things you dont really think about until you start getting overage charges...

I'm actually just doing this post as a service to GFY members & friends/clients. To get a feel for "entry level" tube/mgp/tgp servers.

I'm quite happy with the 2 servers i have with you though....especially my box in your Montreal datacenter

As posted previously, we still have some older-tech (but still much more powerful CPU's than static content serving needs) servers + 100mbit for $499.95/mo

Dual Xeon 2.8Ghz
4GB RAM
250GB SATA HDD
Fully managed, 100mbit included over 100mbit port or burstable on gige

Not the config you were looking for, but overpowered for many bit-serving applications.

Something w/ the horsepower you're looking at (quadcore + 1TB hdd) would be +$100 from that pricing, so $599.95/mo

Are you making a profit at that price $599.95? Or are you just increasing your commit?

ServerCentral owns nlayer, who they also own reflected networks I believe. So in essance bw cost = whatever their trust transit cost/peering costs really is from SC/nlayer.

Pretty much what Spudstr said. Anyone is free to contact me for trials/test downloads and the such. I'll put our network in direct tests with anyone's out there. Our datacenter facilities are located within Equinix and Qwest in 350 East Cermak in Chicago. Out of these locations we have roughly a 500 cabinet footprint.

As for profitability. Yes, $5/Mbit sold in this specific manner is profitable, and is for the long-haul (and will be more so as time goes on). I do find it slightly humorous in some of the posts made on GFY lately with hosts publicly stating such pricing is unsustainable - and then they undercut my bids by a considerable margin (where I simply bow out since it's too cheap) in private in a bid to either keep a current customer, or take one from us. I try to keep what we sell out in the open - why not if it's profitable? We can only sell more by doing so!

I will say, as Brad has stated in the past, that a flat-rate $4-5/Mbit all you can eat with multiple servers/etc. type of plan is not currently sustainable if that is your entire book of business. At least for us. However, in the specific "media server" roles that we've been selling such deals lately, it is certainly very profitable business we enjoy picking up.

Other hosts are also right in that you cannot buy 20gigs of transit at $3/mbit and then resell it for $4/mbit and expect to profit. That's just irresponsible.

We also have scale on our side. Our edge (e.g. traffic to the Internet) now peaks at more than 550Gbps these days.

Also.. anyone that pipes up stating that peering is "free" - please educate yourself prior to posting.

So, flame away! That's probably the most controversial post you'll ever see me make in some time.

-Phil

So what's to stop them from posting what the guy with the highest plan for $100 mpbs pays with similar config right now? Hell take the highest contract add 10% for good measure and post THAT publicly.... who cares! Everyone who reads the quote will see it's more than what they're paying, so no one will give a fuck either way.

This thread is turning wierd...

What would the point of doing that be though? You'd at best not have anyone interested, or at worst turn people off from contacting you since your "prices are too high".

Better to not post at all if you're going to play the "secret pricing" game
