If using SiteDepth, should the site designer..
If using SiteDepth, should the site designer be familair with SiteDepth? Perhaps that would be convenient because of the needed template edits etc.?
Am also wondering if many designers are famiair with SiteDepth |

It helps knowing what's possible with SiteDepth and what not. But SD is pretty simple and easy to learn, so it's not that much of a problem.
If your designer can't do it, hit me up on ICQ# 168048147 and I'll integrate the design into SD for you.

The designer doesn't need to necessarily be familiar with SD itself but there are a few things they need to be familiar with. I have integrated a lot of designs into SD myself and it can be frustrating if the designer did not create the design with a CMS in mind.
Usually I have the biggest problem with integrating the recent/upcoming update template into the tour and issues with displaying images and having them center on the page without altering the design layout. Especially now that sites tend to have much larger images.
