New Firefox extension I made called 'Customizer'. Need beta testers.
 Hey everyone, I just finished up the basics on a new extension I'm working on called Customizer. If you've seen the 'userChrome.css' tweaks around the internet that you can use to add, remove and change some elements in Firefox, you know that no one site has them all and even if they did.. they're not that easy to get working. So I created this extension to do the dirty work for you, it will create the file and edit the file and all you do is check some boxes. You can hide menu items, menus, icons, search bar, magnifying glass... you can change fonts, colors, sizes... all kinds of things. And the interface is super easy to use. http://www.tycamtech.com/customizer There will be a lot more added to it in time as I get to it, but for now I think it's a great start for a beta. So if you like FfvB and would like to have a little more control over what Firefox looks like (this is not a theme however)... then give it a try and leave me some feedback. Oh, and to give you an idea, here's a couple of screen shots: http://www.tycamtech.com/customizer |

 | I just installed it, but I don't get all the options. No matter what I click I never get the options like the ones in your screeshots.

Go to the Tools menu and open the "Error Console" ... then open the extension and see what error it gives you?

would it be because I'm using FF 3.5?

That's truly bizarre that it is not showing the options. There's not much I can do to fix it when I don't get the same problem.... But you're not the only one to have this problem. If you feel up to it, go to about:config and type in javascript. It should display a few settings to you. javascript.options.showInConsole will be set to false, if you change that to true (double click on it) it should force Firefox to show extension errors into that error console.

 | Ah, perfect!! See, I wasn't getting that error but I found it. Give it a re-install (no need to uninstall first) and it should be fixed up. You can use this link: http://www.tycamtech.com/extensions/...mizer0.0.1.xpi |

 | Customizer 0.0.1 could not be installed because it is not compatible with Firefox 3.0.11. Erm.

 | Bump for the night time bunch... feedback, requests would be appreciated. Keep in mind that this isn't a "theme" add on or anything, just a way to customize some things. This extension didn't take me long, it's not a huge piece of hardware. I wrote up the toolbar portion while my wife was gone to the store. It simply takes your input and puts the appropriate CSS into the userChrome.css file found in your Firefox profile. Nice, simple... and it works. (at least I hope it does!) |

 | On the mac, there's no window close button - imposs to save options made. The only way out is Apple-W to close the window but that doesn't save the selections made...

 | yeah, the ok/cancel buttons now show, but nothing is hiding.... checked in both FF 3.0.11 and 3.5 (the options I checked are still checked after a restart, so it's writing the prefs correctly, but it isn't altering what shows/hidden)

I just assumed that the DOM structure for Firefox would be the same for both OSes... but I guess not.

 | well, the file's written and no errors are showing, and it does a little blink/refresh when I hit ok, but nadda on the layout here's what's got written during testing clicking various things from various categories Code: @namespace url("http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul"); /* set default namespace to XUL */
#history-menu{display: none;}#bookmarksMenu{display: none;}#back-button[disabled="true"] { display: none; }#forward-button[disabled="true"] { display: none; }#stop-button[disabled="true"] { display: none; }#home-button { display: none; }

When you open the preferences to the menus pane, do you see all the menu items or just a list of the menus themselves?

 | yeah, I see all the items, and whatever I check gets written to userChrome.css however, it looks like the probs are restricted to the menus, since I think I didn't restart firefox and now the home/back/fwd buttons etc are gone, but still no menus are hidden.

Oh well, I guess that means some things simply won't work on a Mac. I guess when I submit to Firefox's site, I'll have to list it for Windows and Linux (or maybe just Windows to save headaches).

Apple have had a long history in preserving the coveted menu bar space, stemming back to the Apple menu - the single thing that is unhackable. I guess the menu bar real estate is controlled by the OS and nothing higher can alter it.
