Do most visitors to your site(s) have "Automatic Image Resizing" enabled or disabled?

If you link directly to any large-sized images on your site this may concern you. Especially so if it's a mainstream site where the company is linking to large-size images of their product brochures for example, because the text on those images could be rendered unreadable because of auto-resizing.

I realize the surfer just has to then click on the image to increase it's size but I'm of the mind that one should never leave it up to the surfer to make that extra click. Whenever possible it's best to remove as many extra clicks as you can.

Thoughts? Do most surfurs have this enabled?

If you post, you care. :D

I realize that. It was enabled by default in mine as well, but I went into my options and disabled it because it drove me nuts.

I suspect that most people leave it enabled, possibly because they have no clue how to disable it, but I want to know what other webmasters think.

Can you defeat it with css !important perhaps?

I know personally, I go and disable it within moments of getting the browser installed.

I'd also like, if possible, any suggestions as to how to get around this.

I know some people make PDF files out of the large images and then link directly to the PDFs.

Any other ways?

It is definitely not disabled on most surfers browsers. If you want to avoid it, just don't link directly to the image and send them to an html page.

(or use a dhtml image viewer)

No. There's no way to control just the image through css unless it is in HTML, which is not what happens when you link directly to an image of course.

The best way to guarantee you have control on EVERY surfers monitor is to just keep it in HTML, even if there is nothing on the page except the big pic.

Use an .htaccess file, open jpg files as html or open a script, that passes the jpg name through, opening the sourced file in the script/html document. Using the htaccess file, the url remains .jpg.

You can also make it so if a cookie can't be set, it opens the real .jpg file.

I was just coming back to say that I'm sure there's a dozen hacky ways to do it too if you're into that kind of thing

I also clicked your sig to see if you approved my comments and your site isn't loading!

Ah very good, interesting stuff.

I knew that I had read that !important can be used to force font size, even if someone's browser is set custom.. so thought maybe with the images as well.

"<meta http-equiv="imagetoolbar" content="no">" I thought this was only helpful to not display the little menu, I didnt know it defeated the resizing dealy.

If you link directly to the image it isn't going to have any meta tags. I like TheDoc's suggestion.

I'm just surprised by not seeing this in 10yrs when the browsers have been like this for most of that time.

If I open a pic and it's squished and it's porn, you can bet I'll figure out how to edit that setting fast though.. maybe it's a non issue for that reason.

Aye, hardware issue on the box.... I have a feeling my sales will be a little off today.

Comment wise.. I haven't approved comments on my blog in awhile, I guess I could do that. I put my blog on hold. I want to present things differently other than in a 'random' blog updating style, it makes it hard for me update topics out of order right now. Pretty big project that I'm not ready to take on yet.

So, you're saying if you put the large (page-sized) image of the brochure into an html page the browsers then won't resize them? Trying it now....

It seems to work, in IE anyway. I wondered about this but didn't want to create a bunch of new html pages only to find that it didn't work.

Yep, I see that now. (that it works, not that it's the only way)
