How Google could OWN Microsoft

I read that Google is going to take a shot at the operating system business and I thought about it a bit, how could they own Microsoft.

Here's what i think. YMMV

first they need to make their OS a network boot, that way everyone gets the most recent version and its relatively bug free and virus proof. make it a UNIX kernel, UNIX was doing efficient memory management for multi users and multi tasking back in the 70s, Microsoft still hasnt figured that one out...

ok so maybe the network isnt available making your computer a boat anchor....NP keep the last image on the local drive just in case.

apps have to be built to run in this environment they cant make kernel or os mods, they have to conform to the application interface specs. and apps would reside locally.

same for hardware drivers

and of course google offers it for free. Its faster, safer, more efficient and with any luck at all gives windows the death it so richly deserves.

Pis in the sky? maybe but it COULD be done.

They're already working on their OS, there were previews released a few weeks back.

The technical aspects aside for them to even compete it would need IMO:

1. easy to use. It has to be dumb user friendly. It has to be something that the average person can get on their computer and in a few minutes be doing basic stuff with it.

2. It will have to run the software that is out there, or they will have to convince the software manufactures to make stuff that will work with it.

3. They will have to convince companies like Dell and HP and other big computer manufacturers to start offering it on their new computers and offering those computers at a lower price than the windows computer.

4. It has to come bundled with basic software. Right now a basic Windows package gives you a browser, email client wordpad, some games and other basic stuff so you can get started ASAP. They will need something like that. They can put Chrome on it, but they will also need an email client.

5. It has to have no strings attached. If they want you to go to Google and sign up for a google account to use it, many people will skip it. People are incredibly lazy and they don't want to be bothered to have to figure that out.

Anyway, that is just my thoughts.

apple def has taking some market share from msft and so did linux, as is people arent rushing to buy vista, many who use vista simply got it pre installed with their laptop etc.

no doubt a new os = headache for software developers.

but msft has to come up with some innovative stuff or I dont see how they plan on making money off the end user market.

sure... just like Chrome is "owning" Internet Explorer. Google is doing nothing but watching this board with baited breath, for business tips from a bunch of fat, ignorant, dysfunctional/anti-social pornographers.

Where else would a multi billion dollar company get its market/product information and what other basis could they possibly have for their decisions? Obviously sky scrapers full of PHD's and the best of the best talent in every field hasn't helped them one bit so far.

If anyone wants to complete with MS. They would have to start getting newly built machines to come out with the OS, then wait.

I don't know...

I'm not the biggest fan of Microsoft, but not sure if I want my software makers splitting their man hours between different versions of their products. Most software is already a buggy mess -- why would I want to see the quality diluted even further?

They will have their market share, but beating windows is impossible simply beacuse majority of used programs works only on windows and that not going to change ever in most cases. For example,i would love to use linux on my workstation, but i cant since some windows application cannot work there no matter what i try to do.

Gaming and Office apps support are the key to success for an OS for mainstream. Other wise it will be just a trendy OS for fanboi's like Apple's were for so long before they finally were able to start taking a chunk out of mainstream.

They cant make their own browser work, so what makes you think they can make a OS?

And for them to develop a OS that works with, or intergrate with the MS Corporate IT infrastructure, is simply naive and only shows you how little you know about how MS products is used in the corporate businesses.

OpenExchange have been on the market for years, but nobody uses it. Why? because it dont work like MS, its dont Scale like MS, there is no support like with MS, its not Stable like MS.

If you add price + usability + and quality, you wont find anything that comes close to being competitive, beause the products from Microsoft works.

Software written for the OS is what makes it successful not whether or not it is a good OS. If all it took was a good OS Macs would have ruled the world long ago.

Only way it would have a chance of seriously hurting MS would be for Chrome to run windows software, flawlessly. Google seems to have ADD they start all these projects but never seem to develop them like they should.

It doesn't look like google has enough expertise to create a succesfull competitive OS. They cannot even get their browser to the masses, and that's nothing compared to what introducing a new OS to the market will require.

it will be hard because of all the older programs that can only run windows xp for example. I have a production printer that needs to be run on an xp system. The company just doesn't have all the right programs for vista

and its most likely worth it to Google to simply dig at Microsofts market share in all arenas (search/search marketing/ppc engine/other online ads/browser/OS etc). they don't have to build a better OS or displace Vista/et al. that doesn't have to be the short term goal or the goal at all. they can simply chip away at them for the long term until they are weak enough to go for the kill shot. people forget that for a super huge company like this... this kind of bullshit is often just a small tax write off. microsoft has a long history of playing hardball to gain/control marketshare. finally someone can start to put them in their place and apply persistent pressure to them.

Yep. Evidently the support is fairly clean too; Android is targeted for an ARM, but a couple of guys successfully built it on x86, specifically, an eee NetBook 1000H.

I would rather see MSFT owning Google in the search game...the new partnership with Yahoo and the whole Bing thing are a step in the right direction.

Anybody relying on SE traffic or even better using Adsense or Adwords know how much Google needs some serious competition...
