I wouldn't have any problems with that. I drink maybe a few times per year (drunk). A few beers after a sauna maybe once a month. My wife actually said I SHOULD get out more and party with my friends, she finds my lack of social activity distrubing

I was confronted with that choice in my 20's and after college. I chose booze.

In my thirties, with the right woman, I would have chosen the other. However, it's a non-issue now as I quit 5 years ago. So I no longer need to worry about chew, or booze any longer.

That's about the size of it. She's irritated that I cut loose on the weekend, and because she's pregnant, she can't.

The trouble is I work like a dog all week and enjoy getting tanked on good wine on the weekend, but we have a kid as well already, that needs looking after. Hard to do when hungover like a muppet. I need a live in au pair. That would work on a number of levels.

That's an easy one - yes. If she's not the love of your life, your relationship should end soon enough at which point you can go back to drinking. If she is the love of your life and is asking you to do that, chances are it's for your own good and you should do it anyways.

Alcohol isn't necessary to have fun or even to loosen up - figure out other ways.

well, their unhappiness is a big consideration. but you have to think about why they are asking, and it most likely is a problem. either you drink too much and or the relationship is worse because of your drinking. either you are out without her, or don't treat her the same etc.
my drinking past isn't really important to detail here i think. but suffice it to say, you can quit and be quite happy. it may take years to reach that point, but its a good thing all in all.

There's a big difference between someone who's a heavy drinker, who can function normally for 99% of the time, and an alcoholic, who has a problem functioning in society to a reasonable level, and totally reliant on alcohol.

I know of plenty highly functional alcoholics. Wake up, drink. Go to work, drink. Come home from work, drink until they pass out. Wake up, repeat. It's a hell of a life to live, IMHO, but it seems to work for them. I'd choose something else.

Something that hasn't been addressed here: is it only a phase for you? I rarely drink, but every few years I'll go through a period of a few months to a year where I drink once or twice a week ... then it dies down to hardly no drinking.

Sometimes I like to drink, most of the time I don't. I am the DD 95% of the time and also don't drink 9 out of 10 times that I throw a party where everybody is getting trashed.

BUT...when I do drink, I drink to get drunk. Probably why I am not a big drinker in the first place; I don't drink for the taste of it.

No way, I mean I can see the circumstance if the person was a total alcoholic. But then it's not really about "stop drinking for me", it's more about "stop your addiction, quit hurting your friends and family, secure yourself and your job and your future - for me". Slightly different.

Is that 100% 100%? I could easily give up getting hammered. I have less and less interest in going out and getting annihilated these days. However on a hot day, I do like a cold beer or two. I don't see how that is unreasonable.

If I can't even have a nice cool light domestic beer on a summer afternoon, well fuck her, she can pack her bags and leave. If she just wants me to stop getting hammered and passing out in a puddle of my own piss on the kitchen floor at 4:00am on a Tuesday night, I could probably work on that...
