How Can a "CIVILIZED" Country Allow this CRUELTY?

Every year young men from Denmark get together to SLAUGHTER pilot whales, and nearly 1000 of these beautiful and harmless animals are killed, JUST FOR FUN!

Link with more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whaling..._Faroe_Islands

Why is this allowed, and how can an otherwised civilized country condone this brutal practice?

You say there are killed just for fun. They kill them because probably they want to satisfy their sadistic urges.

The article says that the whales are not used for food because chief medical officers of the Faroe Islands have recommended that pilot whales no longer be considered fit for human consumption because of the levels of toxins in the whales.

actually, i saw a great documentary last night about how we are wiping out the fish population globally..

by 2050 there will be almost nothing left to sustain the worlds population with fish..

what was interesting was that because of the fish required to make fish food, fish farming is not an alternative...

Dont forget Spaniards, Mexican and many more hispanic countries that have fun killing bulls, theres so much things to do in life, why do we have to attack an animal that is being bothered on their own territory.

This really makes me sad

Just another example of ancient ritual and tradition not catching up with present day reality. Much like circumcision and other nonsense monkeys like to do to each other and other animals..

How does one expose the secret systematic slaughter of 23,000 dolphins?

It helps to have a billionaire, plus a dedicated activist, a neophyte filmmaker, two of the world's best free-divers, a former avionics specialist from the Canadian Air Force, a logistics whiz trained in transporting pop-music stars around the world, a maritime technician, a military infrared camera for night cinematography, unmanned aerial drones, a blimp and fake rocks specially designed by George Lucas' Industrial Light & Magic to hold secret cameras.

Also required? A willingness to risk arrest, police harassment and potentially much worse.

That was the "Ocean's Eleven"-style team assembled to make this year's Sundance sensation "The Cove," the unconventional true-life environmental thriller that brings to light the mass killings of dolphins, specifically those exterminated in the Japanese port village of Taiji, just south of Osaka. The footage in the film, which opened in L.A. theaters Friday, is shocking -- a tranquilly beautiful Japanese bay turned red with the blood of dolphins, as well as graphic images of fishermen spearing the gentle, highly intelligent sea mammals.

Unlike their larger cetacean brethren whales, dolphins are not protected by the worldwide ban on commercial whaling that has been in effect since the 1980s. Taiji, a bucolic town filled with boats bearing the images of happy dolphins, is, as shown in the film, essentially a dolphin bazaar for marine theme parks hunting for their next attraction, and they are willing to pay $150,000 per dolphin. Unselected dolphins are herded into a heavily protected secret cove where they're slaughtered for food, never mind the fact that, as the film makes clear, dolphin meat is chock-full of mercury -- or as one on-screen scientist states: The creatures are essentially swimming toxic waste dumps.

The $2.5-million film, three years in the making, was born of the friendship between National Geographic photographer Louie Psihoyos and Netscape founder Jim Clark, old dive buddies who spent the last 10 years traveling the world searching for the best reefs, which they soon realized were dramatically deteriorating each time they returned.

i watched that movie and am not ashame to say i shed a lotta tears its a PITA to see mankinds cruelty ...

Animals kill only what they need to eat. Only humans act in this primitive, disgusting and even sub-human manner. Only humans kill for the thrilll alone. Only humans have killed nearly three hundred million of their own in the last 100 years fighting over no-one-knows-what-or-can-remember.

Every economic sanction available should be imposed on Denmark for this unnecessary, brutal, primitive and disgusting tragedy.

How people treat animals is a measure of how they treat their children.

How would you like to be a Danish child?

Just fuckin' sayin'.

Rofl rofl for the Canadian seal clubbing. Harp seals are like fucking rats in New York. The fucking things breed like rabbits and would destroy the local eco-system. Unfortunately, we don't have killer whales hunting seals like they do in Argentina. That's ok, though. America hates Argentina, and Sea Lions aren't all that cute.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seal_hunting

The only reason people bitch is because harp seals are cute. I laugh at hypocrites who cry over cuddly harp seals, yet don't say a word against any other cute, huggable animals that are hunted or culled. Super huggable animals that are illegal to hunt include - cute, cuddly skunks, raccoons, and coyotes. Coyotes are super cute - particularly when they're laying waste to your sheep, your cattle, or your family pets. Can't kill them, though. Can't kill most snakes, either, come to think of it.

I've won ex-girlfriends cuddly stuffed crab at the Canadian National Exhibition. Go picket The Deadliest Catch, pussy. Even THEY have quotas. I think snuggly stuffed crab and lobsters are a lot cuter than stuffed baby harp seals. Can you even win those fucking things, anywhere? No-one wants to haul around a fucking seal. Lobsters are a LOT cuter.

Seals are mammalian rodents.

If you've ever shot or poisoned anything, laid out a trap, or hired an exterminator - fuck off, you fucking hypocryte.

The Spirit Of The Wild

Population of Newfoundlad / Labrador: Approximately 10,000 inhabitants.
Harp Seal Population: The Northwest Atlantic harp seal population is currently estimated at 6.9 million animals

Homo Sapiens have to eat and clothe themselves. The sustainable human population on earth was surpassed circa 1987. Unless you want to start culling humans, we are going to have to clear more forests and kill more and more species.

I'm all for Canada cutting off mineral, vegetable, water, and food sources to other countries. I'm all for Canada giving the middle finger to stranded island nations that have already wasted their resources - or countries that have grown so fat and greedy that they can't sustain themselves.

And I'm sick of spending my tax dollars to support miserable failure nations and their pathetic, criminal citizens.

THAT just came out of left field. If you live in a country that has absolutely nothing left - maybe you should just shut your mouth.

"otherwise civilized"..................................

The Danes have clearly demonstrated how thin the veneer of "civilization" really is.

Does killing pilot whales make their dicks bigger?

Do Danish women get off because their potential studs have slaughtered essentially helpless whales?

"Oh, fuck me harder, you big bad whale killer!"

I am certain there are Danes on this forum and hope that at least one of them comes in to disavow this fucking shit.

Just fuckin' sayin'.

Just to let the rational people a few important details.

The food is kept and eaten, the tools used have been chosen for the quickest kill possible, the kill is highly regulated to ensure the animals suffer the least possibe.

I read an article by George Monbiot a while back regarding native shark populations. Apparently the conservative estimates are that in the last 40 years alone, man has wiped out 90% or more of the population. He also went on to discuss issues regarding the fishing industry lobbies and other native fish populations in the oceans. There have been cases in which native populations have been re-established, but it requires almost complete shut down of the fishing industry in the area, and takes years and years to regrow. The lobbies for the industry will never let it happen, and within a few decades there will be nothing left for them to fish at all. (It draws shocking comparisons to the adult industry really) The fish in the ocean are generally "out of sight, out of mind" to most people though, so it doesn't get much attention. The situation however isn't good for much of the ocean's wild fish populations. No politician wants to be the one who killed a location economy because he wanted to save some fish. But from what it sounds like, they are driving right into a dead economy at their own hands as is.

Most part of traditional Faroese food consists of flesh. Because of the rugged, rocky Faroese terrain, grain and vegetables have not been able to grow very well as only about 2% of the 1,393 km2 is arable land and none is set aside for permanent crops.[10] During the winter months the Faroe Islanders´ only option was to mostly eat salted or dried food (this includes meat, pilot whale meat, seabirds, and fish). This means that over the centuries, the pilot whale has been an important source of food and vitamins to the isolated population on the North Atlantic archipelago.

The pilot whale meat and blubber is stored, prepared, and eaten in the Faroese households. This also means that whale meat is not available at supermarkets. Although the Faroe Islands' main export is fish, this does not include pilot whale meat or blubber. An annual catch of 956 pilot whales[11] (1990?1999) is roughly equivalent to 500 tonnes of meat and blubber, some 30% of all meat produced locally in the Faroe Islands.

Animals don't have rights.

“Here’s the point, this is what I want somewhere in your little interview. My name is Ted Nugent and because of Pam Anderson and because of Bill Maher and because of Paul McCartney, all the members of PETA, whenever I hear the word animal or rights in the same paragraph, I’m killing an extra hundred of something this year.

“I have unlimited deer tags in Michigan and Texas, and I don’t even need to kill them really, but I’m going to for Bill Maher. I’m not just killing them I’m f*cking slaughtering them and I’m going to gut them and skin them, quarter them and butcher them and feed them to the soup kitchen and homeless shelters of America. Not because I need to, because it will cause Bill Maher to sh*t blood. That’s my goal in life.”

i am ok with breeding and killing animals for food in a controlled environment and in the least stressful way possible for the animal - otherwise i would need to become vegetarian. but there are single local "events" like the ones mentioned above that have nothing to do with that and it seems to be more about the "fun" - and no other purpose. And i am not ok with that - no matter where it happens.

Don't blame us, it's already illegal here. Faroe Islands and Greenland are part of the Kingdom but autonomous provinces. Denmark can't interfere with their internal affairs vice versa.

The pilot whale as a source of food

An annual catch of 956 pilot whales[11] (1990–1999) is roughly equivalent to 500 tonnes of meat and blubber, some 30% of all meat produced locally in the Faroe Islands.
[edit]Food preparation

Tvøst og spik. Black meat of the pilot whale and blubber (middle), together with dried fish (left) and potatoes. Whale meat and blubber is a Faroese specialty. Well into the last century meat and blubber from the pilot whale meant food for a long time. Everybody got a share, as is the custom to this day.[12] The meat and blubber can be stored and prepared in a variety of ways such as Tvøst og spik. When fresh, the meat is boiled or served as steaks. A pilot whale steak is in Faroese called grindabúffur. Whale meat with blubber and potatoes in their skins are put in to a saucepan with salt and then boiled for an hour. Slivers of the blubber are also a popular accompaniment to dried fish.
The traditional preservation is by salting or outdoor wind-drying. Today the meat and blubber is often kept in the freezer. The traditional way of storage is still being practiced however, particularly in the villages.

Better switch to being a veggie then, because there is nothing pleasant about the controlled environment that animals and bred and killed in.

I have more respect for the people who go out in to that water and kill the animal themselves for food/materials than pussies who sit at home and preach from their armchair in front of the TV about how awful humans are to animals. (this is a general comment, not directed towards you)

As long as they consume what they kill, I have no issue with it. Same goes for any game hunter. Its one thing to be out in the marsh blasting away like you're playing Duck Hunt on NES, and another thing if you're collecting and eating what you've killed.

The country must have a certain allowance of whales a year.
Same goes for Japan.

I'm sure if we witnessed the killing scenes of everything we eat that has a face, more people would be vegetarians. It doesn't mean that those scenes are any less brutal.

Why is this allowed, and how can an otherwised civilized country condone this brutal practice?
Get your facts straight, please. Danes do NOT condone that crap. It raises a debate here everytime it comes up.
Unfortunately we're stuck with the Faroe Islands as an autonomous region and THEY are the perpetrators here.

It would be the same as blaming all Americans for any shit that goes on internally in Iraq, basically. Like pointing the finger at YOU because an Iraqi performs a Halal slaughter of an animal.

if that was true there would be no fish anymore since the seals are there much longer than the humans. also you could give them a clean shot instead of using clubs. or is there a small chance that it's maybe about the fur instead?

But don't you get it? They're killing the whales to save them;)
Or some such utter bullshit.

The good thing is that REAL Conservationists Sea Shepherd has been on the scene. They have operatives in the Faeroes and they've been actively trying to sabotage the idiots-
They have deployed an acoustical Warning System for the whales which will hopefully large numbers of them away-

Over the last few weeks, Sea Shepherd has maintained a presence in the Faeroe Islands in opposition to the slaughter of pilot whales by Faeroese citizens. From our ship the Golfo Azzurro, we have been gathering evidence and deploying experimental acoustical devices in the water to ward migrating pilot whales away from the island...
If you want to get involved in anyway i suggest connecting with Sea Shepherd. They talk the talk and walk the walk.

what scares me more than anything is that people get more upset about the slaughter of animals than they do the slaughter of people.

Ethiopia? fuck them they should move where the food is, South Africa? fuck them they should wear condoms, Pakistan? fuck them they are muslim terrorists

Seals and whales? They are so innocent! lets all come together and do something about it!!! those people should all be lined up and shot!! or jail for life and then shot!!

I would hardly say that living in a can being force-fed with chemicals and antibiotics is the "least stressful" life for an animal.

People hunt all over the world, and for many good reasons. Here in the United States hunting is very big sport but it's also necessary so that the DNR can control animal populations to prevent spread of disease and many other nasty things that can happen to animals. Hunting is not bad, it serves a very good purpose both for people and for animals. I would take wild food over stuffed livestock any day, so much better tasting and it actually serves an ecological purpose.

But in the end, we all know that hunting cute animals like whales and bunnies is bad but hunting mean animals like bears and possums is good.

first: i never said that i want animals force-fed etc. - whenever i can i buy meat that comes from reliable sources that do not do that. unfortunately especially here in CZ it's hard to find

second: i have no (big) problem with hunting as long as no one forces me to join

the only thing i don't like is torturing and killing animals for fun, tradition or bogus scientific reasons to hide the real reasons.

and yes, i am a hypocrit, i care more about a cute baby seal than a cow
